Manganese release from corrosion products of cast iron pipes in drinking water distribution systems: Effect of water temperature, pH, alkalinity, SO42- concentration and disinfectants

Shengnan Zhang et al.

Summary: The release of manganese from corrosion scales in drinking water distribution systems is influenced by factors such as pH, alkalinity, temperature, and sulfate concentration, with disinfectants found to inhibit manganese release. Sulfate concentration and alkalinity are significantly important in controlling manganese release, while pH and disinfectant type also play a significant role. Further investigation of the impact of disinfectants on manganese release in DWDSs is necessary for better understanding and management of water quality.

The mechanism changes during bisphenol A degradation in three iron functionalized biochar/peroxymonosulfate systems: The crucial roles of iron contents and graphitized carbon layers

Kai Li et al.

Summary: Three magnetic biochar nanocomposites were prepared with different catalytic performances for bisphenol A degradation, where C800-3 showed the best performance. The dominant role of electron transfer pathway was gradually replaced by the SO4 center dot- pathway with the increase of iron amount and the destruction of graphitized carbon layers.

Effect of inorganic anions on the performance of advanced oxidation processes for degradation of organic contaminants

Jianlong Wang et al.

Summary: Inorganic anions such as chloride, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, and nitrate have a significant impact on the performance of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). This influence is not solely attributed to their quenching effect, but also affects reactive species, oxidant stability, catalyst activity, and degradation products. Understanding the comprehensive evaluation of the effect of inorganic anions on AOPs is crucial for optimizing the treatment of organic pollutants.

Electron transfer enhancing Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle by sulfur and biochar in magnetic FeS@biochar to active peroxymonosulfate for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid degradation

Qiaofeng Hong et al.

Summary: A highly active mediator (MFB) based on FeS@biochar was prepared for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, showing excellent performance in degrading 2,4-D pesticides with enhanced lifetime. The optimized reaction parameters were determined, and a novel kinetics model was proposed for describing the interfacial adsorption and catalytic reaction process accurately. The study also highlighted the inhibitory effects of pH and coexisting anions on 2,4-D degradation, providing a promising approach for designing high-performance mediators in environmental remediation.

Evaluation of peroxymonosulfate/O3/UV process on a real polluted water with landfill leachate: Feasibility and comparative study

Farshid Ghanbari et al.

Summary: The study found that the PMS/O-3/UV process showed high efficiency in removing hazardous materials such as TOC, COD, color, and ammonia from polluted landfill leachate. The addition of ferrous ions increased TOC removal efficiency, while cobalt ions had no significant effect. The process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model with a reaction rate constant of 0.0203 min(-1). Compared to peroxone/UV, PMS/O-3/UV demonstrated superior performance in removing pollutants from low volume polluted water.
