Method for Economic Evaluation of Bacterial Whole Genome Sequencing Surveillance Compared to Standard of Care in Detecting Hospital Outbreaks

Praveen Kumar et al.

Summary: A study developed an infection prevention program based on WGS surveillance, finding it to be more cost-effective and efficient in preventing hospital outbreaks compared to standard of care. The cost of performing WGS and the number of isolates sequenced per year under WGS surveillance were identified as key factors affecting the economic value.

Molecular surveillance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus genomes in hospital unexpectedly reveals discordance between temporal and genetic clustering

Summary: This study used whole-genome sequencing to identify sources and linkages among MRSA infections, finding that temporal clustering may not necessarily indicate genetic linkage, while shared epidemiological characteristics may point toward unidentified hospital sources.

Pilot study of a combined genomic and epidemiologic surveillance program for hospital-acquired multidrug-resistant pathogens across multiple hospital networks in Australia

Norelle L. Sherry et al.

Summary: The pilot study successfully combined genomic and epidemiologic surveillance to predict transmission of hospital-acquired multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) between patients and estimate the local burden of MDRO transmission. The findings showed that a significant proportion of MDRO transmission occurred in the hospital setting, emphasizing the importance of combining genomics and epidemiology for targeted interventions.

Budget impact analysis of routinely using whole-genomic sequencing of six multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens in Queensland, Australia

Louisa G. Gordon et al.

Summary: This study aimed to predict the cost and health effects of routine use of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) compared with standard care for bacterial pathogens. By analyzing data from 27 hospitals in Queensland, Australia, the study found that WGS surveillance could prevent a substantial number of hospital patients from being infected with multidrug-resistant organisms, leading to cost savings and reduced mortality. Primary prevention through routine use of WGS is recommended as an investment priority for controlling serious hospital-associated infections.

Whole Genome Sequencing Detects Minimal Clustering Among Escherichia coli Sequence Type 131-H30 Isolates Collected From United States Children's Hospitals

Arianna Miles-Jay et al.

Summary: Whole genome sequencing was utilized to identify potential transmission clusters of clinical multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli sequence type 131-H30 in four children's hospitals in the United States. Of the 126 isolates, 17 were involved in 8 putative transmission clusters; with 4 clusters showing evidence of healthcare-associated epidemiologic linkages. Geographic clustering analyses revealed weak geographic clustering patterns.
