Evolution of right and left ventricle routine and speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients recovering from coronavirus disease 2019: a longitudinal study

Guy Baruch et al.

Summary: This study assessed changes in echocardiographic parameters in COVID-19 patients during hospitalization and at 3-month follow-up. The results showed significant improvement in some right ventricle parameters at follow-up, while left ventricle parameters did not change significantly. Approximately a quarter of the patients still had left ventricle systolic dysfunction, suggesting subclinical LV dysfunction may be a part of COVID-19 recovery.

Myocarditis and coronary aneurysms in a child with acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2

Cristina Ciuca et al.

Summary: A 6-year-old African boy with multi-viral infection, including parvovirus B19 and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, presented with persistent fever, respiratory distress, and myocarditis leading to cardiogenic shock. Treatment with a combination of medications led to normalization of cardiac function and coronary diameters, with cardiac MRI showing mild myocardial interstitial edema indicative of cardiac stunning related to cytokine storm rather than direct viral injury.

Characteristics and Outcomes of US Children and Adolescents With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Compared With Severe Acute COVID-19

Leora R. Feldstein et al.

Summary: Comparing the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with MIS-C and COVID-19 can help distinguish between the two conditions and improve health outcomes. Patterns of clinical presentation and organ system involvement were identified in this case series, providing valuable information for differentiation of MIS-C and COVID-19.

Association of Intravenous Immunoglobulins Plus Methylprednisolone vs Immunoglobulins Alone With Course of Fever in Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children

Naim Ouldali et al.

Summary: Among children with MIS-C, treatment with IVIG and methylprednisolone compared to IVIG alone was associated with a more favorable fever course, reduced risk of needing second-line therapy, hemodynamic support, acute left ventricular dysfunction after initial therapy, and shorter stay in the pediatric intensive care unit. The study interpretation is limited by its observational design.

Trends in Acute Myocarditis Related Pediatric Hospitalizations in the United States, 2007-2016

Rhythm Vasudeva et al.

Summary: This study found that the incidence of pediatric acute myocarditis in the United States has been increasing annually, while the in-hospital mortality rate has been decreasing. The occurrence of congestive heart failure remained stable, while hospitalization costs have been increasing annually with stable length of stay. Future studies are needed to investigate long-term outcomes related to acute myocarditis.

COVID-19-related cardiac complications from clinical evidences to basic mechanisms: opinion paper of the ESC Working Group on Cellular Biology of the Heart

Maurizio Pesce et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic poses a global threat with high mortality rates, particularly in the elderly, mainly due to interstitial pneumonia and heart vulnerability. Long-term consequences on the heart post-pandemic are a concern, with questions remaining about various modalities of cardiac dysfunction in COVID-19 patients. This opinion paper focuses on exploring lesser-known possibilities and proposing experimental approaches to understand cardiac injury in COVID-19 patients on a cellular and molecular level.

Myocarditis With COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines

Biykem Bozkurt et al.

Summary: Myocarditis is a rare complication of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, predominantly affecting young adult and adolescent males, with most patients showing improvement in symptoms. Possible mechanisms include molecular mimicry between viral proteins and self-antigens, dysregulated immune pathways, immune response to mRNA, and dysregulated cytokine expression.

Diagnosis and Management of Myocarditis in Children A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Yuk M. Law et al.

Summary: Myocarditis remains a clinical challenge in pediatrics, with diagnostic focus shifting from endomyocardial biopsy to clinical suspicion and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. The presentation of myocarditis varies widely, ranging from minimal symptoms to severe complications like heart failure or cardiogenic shock. Despite advances in understanding and management, the lack of a universally accepted definition for myocarditis hinders progress in targeted therapy.

COVID-19 Vaccination-Associated Myocarditis in Adolescents

Supriya S. Jain et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the clinical presentation, short-term prognosis, and myocardial tissue changes in pediatric patients with C-VAM. The results showed that most patients had mild myocarditis and excellent short-term outcomes, with resolution of symptoms, arrhythmias, and ventricular dysfunction. Further studies are needed to understand the long-term implications of these myocardial tissue changes.
