Wigner functions and quantum kinetic theory of polarized photons

Koichi Hattori et al.

Summary: In this study, the Wigner functions of polarized photons in the Coulomb gauge were derived using the expansion in quantum field theory, and side-jump effects for massless photons were identified. The photonic chiral vortical effect for the Chern-Simons current and zilch vortical effect for the zilch current in local thermal equilibrium were discussed as a consistency check for the formalism, showing agreement with results from different approaches. The quantum kinetic theory for polarized photons was constructed using the real-time formalism, and a more concise form of an effective QKT was provided by adopting a specific power counting scheme for the distribution functions.

Experimental perspective on three-dimensional topological semimetals

B. Q. Lv et al.

Summary: Topological semimetals are characterized by bulk band crossings, which have led to increased research activities in the field due to precise theoretical predictions, well-controlled material synthesis, and advanced characterization techniques. The distinct features of these materials include dimensionality, degeneracy, slope and order of band dispersion, topological invariants, and crystallographic symmetries that stabilize band crossings. Additionally, the unique properties of various topological semimetal phases, such as nontrivial surface states and transport responses, have been reviewed.

Chiral Anomaly-Enhanced Casimir Interaction between Weyl Semimetals

Jia-Nan Rong et al.

Summary: The theoretical study shows that the Casimir attraction between Weyl semimetals can be enhanced by the chiral anomaly when the distance between semi-infinite Weyl semimetals is in the micrometer regime. The Casimir attraction exhibits anisotropic behavior for the relative orientation of separations of Weyl nodes in the Brillouin zone when they are parallel to the interface. Additionally, the Casimir force can be repulsive in the micrometer regime under certain conditions.

Chiral kinetic theory of anomalous transport induced by torsion

Lan-Lan Gao et al.

Summary: A general kinetic theory of anomalous transport in Weyl systems was constructed using phase space Berry curvature induced by torsion, which describes the generation of chiral chemical potential and the chiral magnetic effect in the presence of a background magnetic field. Researchers proposed to measure the CME current induced by torsion as a way to detect the anomalous coupling between the coordinate-space and momentum-space chiralities.

Chiral magnetic effect reveals the topology of gauge fields in heavy-ion collisions

Dmitri E. Kharzeev et al.

Summary: Experimental observations in heavy-ion collisions may uncover the importance of the topological structure of vacuum in laboratory experiments, which could contribute to the understanding of quantum chromodynamics, the origin of the baryon asymmetry in the present-day Universe, and other areas, including condensed matter physics.
