Synthesis, Crystallization, Structure Memory Effects, and Molecular Dynamics of Biobased and Renewable Poly(n-alkylene succinate)s with n from 2 to 10

Panagiotis A. Klonos et al.

Summary: In this study, five poly(n-alkylene succinate)s were synthesized via multi-step polycondensation methods and investigated from the perspectives of structure, crystallinity, and molecular mobility. Lower n values were found to result in stronger structure/crystal memory and higher crystalline fraction, while the polymer chain length directly affected the nucleation rate. The molecular dynamics mapping of these polyesters revealed accelerated segmental dynamics with increasing n and reduced cooperativity, with spatial confinement imposed on the amorphous polymer by distributed crystallites as n increased. These findings suggest potential for tuning final polymer properties related to crystallization for future biomedical, packaging, and other applications.

Suppression of the Self-Nucleation Effect of Semicrystalline Polymers by Confinement

Ming Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of confinement on self-nucleation behavior of PCL and PBS polymers was investigated using AAO templates. The results showed a narrowing and disappearance of the SN region with decreasing AAO diameter, providing a method for estimating self-nuclei density in different polymers at varying temperatures.
