The development of hollow multishelled structure: from the innovation of synthetic method to the discovery of new characteristics

Jiangyan Wang et al.

Summary: Hollow multishelled structure (HoMS) is a highly complex and multifunctional material, with synthesis being a challenging task. Great achievements have been made in the past decade, especially through the sequential templating approach, which has significantly advanced the development of HoMS. HoMS with temporal-spatial ordering plays a crucial role in energy conversion, catalysis, and drug delivery areas.

Delicate Control on the Shell Structure of Hollow Spheres Enables Tunable Mass Transport in Water Splitting

Ping Hou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel method to regulate the shell structures of hollow multishell structures, transforming the shells from solid to bubble-like and replicating them with narrow spacing through a simple phosphorization process. The fabricated CoP HoMSs with closely duplicated shells exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance in the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction, benefitting from the unbalanced Laplace pressure for increased gas release and enhanced capillary force for accelerated liquid transfer.

CrN-Encapsulated Hollow Cr-N-C Capsules Boosting Oxygen Reduction Catalysis in PEMFC

Hui Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple strategy for synthesizing chromium nitride nanoparticles (CrNNPs) encapsulated into hollow chromium-nitrogen-carbon capsules (CrN@H-Cr-N-x-C), demonstrating excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic solutions. The results highlight the importance of atomically dispersed CrNx sites and sufficient CrNNPs coexistence for superior performance in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Overall, this finding provides a new avenue for the development of low-cost, highly active, and durable ORR catalysts for PEMFC and other applications.
