A high-performance electrocatalyst composed of nickel clusters encapsulated with a carbon network on TiN nanaowire arrays for the oxygen evolution reaction

Xiang Peng et al.

Summary: Metal cluster catalysts show great potential in electrocatalysis, with a focus on minimizing negative effects such as materials aggregation. In this study, Ni nano-clusters with a carbon network and porous TiN nanowires on carbon cloth were utilized to create a high-performance electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction in water splitting, showing superior activity and stability. The interaction between Ni nano-clusters and TiN substrate is crucial for promoting OER activity.

Mechanistic understanding of CO2 Reduction Reaction Towards C1 products by molecular transition metal porphyrin catalysts

Ling Guo et al.

Summary: Utilizing atomically isolated transition metal-N-4 sites anchored on porphyrin framework as molecular catalysts for eCO(2)RR is a promising approach for designing low-cost, highly efficient, and durable electrocatalysts. These catalysts offer a better understanding of the CO2 reduction mechanism and show potential as highly active and selective catalysts for carbon monoxide, formic acid, methane, and methanol production, while suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Among different TM/PRF materials, Ta/PRF and W/PRF demonstrate selective production of CH3OH at low overpotentials, while Ti/PRF is highly selective towards CH4 production with reduced overpotential, outperforming most known electrodes.

Role of the Carbon-Based Gas Diffusion Layer on Flooding in a Gas Diffusion Electrode Cell for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Kailun Yang et al.

Summary: The deployment of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has significantly increased current densities, but stability challenges arise due to rapid flooding of GDEs. Research shows that applied potential plays a central role in causing instabilities in carbon gas diffusion layers (GDLs) during CO2RR, leading to independent flooding issues. The study findings can be applied to electrochemical reduction reactions using carbon-based GDEs with cathodic overpotentials less than -0.65 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode.

Nanoengineering Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Use in Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Reactions

Yingji Zhao et al.

Summary: Using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) processes has attracted considerable research attention due to their atomically dispersed active sites, large surface area, high porosity, controllable morphology, and remarkable tunability. The improvement of conductivity, introduction of active centers, and formation of carbon-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) from well-defined MOFs have been explored for the development of CO2 conversion. The review summarizes the progress on pristine MOFs, MOF hybrids, and MOF-derived carbon-based SACs for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2, and discusses the limitations and potential improvement directions in this field of research.

CO2 electrolysis to multicarbon products in strong acid

Jianan Erick Huang et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide electroreduction (CO2R) is being actively studied as a promising route to convert carbon emissions to valuable chemicals and fuels. A study found that concentrating potassium cations in the vicinity of electrochemically active sites accelerates CO2 activation to enable efficient CO2R in acid. The research achieved a high CO2R efficiency on copper at pH <1 with a single-pass CO2 utilization of 77%.
