Assessment of microplastic sampling and extraction methods for drinking waters

Chuqiao Yuan et al.

Summary: No standardized methods currently exist for analyzing microplastics in treated drinking waters, leading to difficulties in making direct comparisons between studies. This study evaluates two known methods for collecting and extracting microplastics from drinking waters, finding that an in-line filtration method shows higher recoveries for reference microplastics and has a greater potential to reduce microplastic contamination.

Occurrence and distribution of microplastics in water supply systems: In water and pipe scales

Xianxian Chu et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution has attracted widespread attention, and this study found that MPs are present in both water and pipe scale samples from a drinking water treatment plant and distribution system. The concentrations of MPs in pipe scales were higher than in water, with predominant particles being 50-100 micrometers in size. Nylon and polyvinyl chloride were the most abundant MPs in water and pipe scale samples, respectively. The drinking water treatment plant and distribution system effectively prevent MPs from entering tap water, reducing the risk associated with MP pollution.

Polystyrene microplastics induced male reproductive toxicity in mice

Haibo Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on male reproductive systems in mice. The results showed that PS-MPs accumulated in the testis, entered testicular cells, and led to decreased sperm quality and testosterone levels. Additionally, PS-MPs induced testicular inflammation and disruption of the blood-testis barrier, demonstrating the potential reproductive dysfunctions caused by microplastics.

Drinking plastics? - Quantification and qualification of microplastics in drinking water distribution systems by mu FTIR and Py-GCMS

Inga V. Kirstein et al.

Summary: The concentrations of microplastics in potable water are debated, likely due to variations in water quality, quantification methods, and analytical standards. Reliable methods for assessing microplastics in drinking water are lacking, but proper assessment requires quality assurance, adequate volume assessment, and understanding of analytical method differences. The study used validated techniques to assess microplastics in drinking water distribution systems and found low contents, suggesting low risk to human health.

Microplastics from headwaters to tap water: occurrence and removal in a drinking water treatment plant in Barcelona Metropolitan area (Catalonia, NE Spain)

Joan Dalmau-Soler et al.

Summary: This study examined the presence of microplastics in the Llobregat river basin in Catalonia, Spain, and their removal efficiency in the drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). Sand filtration was identified as the key stage in microplastic removal, with ultrafiltration/reverse osmosis proving more effective for removal than ozonation/carbon filtration. Preliminary migration tests were also conducted to identify potential sources of microplastics in each treatment step.
