Dose-response analysis of diesel fuel phytotoxicity on selected plant species

Michael O. Eze et al.

Summary: Bioassays were conducted on 15 plant species to determine their tolerance to diesel fuel toxicity. Results showed that increasing diesel fuel concentrations generally led to a decrease in biomass in 13 species, while Medicago sativa exhibited a significant hormetic influence. The study highlights the importance of considering hormesis in plant toxicology research.

Plant-Soil-Microbiota Combination for the Removal of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH): An In-Field Experiment

Daniela Zuzolo et al.

Summary: The contamination of soil with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) can have serious consequences, but through adaptive biological system dynamics and experimental trials, it has been found that Poaceae and Fabaceae plants have significant potential for soil remediation.

Bioaugmented Phytoremediation of Metal-Contaminated Soils and Sediments by Hemp and Giant Reed

Andrea Ferrarini et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of EDTA and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on phytoremediation of soils and sediments contaminated by heavy metals. Results showed that giant reed had good removal percentages of heavy metals, while hemp showed negligible removal. The use of PGPR in combination with deep-rooting perennial crops may be preferable for bioaugmentation in contaminated sites, leading to better bioremediation results.

Diversity and metagenome analysis of a hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial consortium from asphalt lakes located in Wietze, Germany

Michael O. Eze et al.

Summary: The study isolated a bacterial consortium from a historic petroleum contaminated site in Germany, using diesel fuel hydrocarbons as the sole carbon and energy source. Analysis revealed Alphaproteobacteria as the dominant genus, with Acidocella possessing genes for degrading diesel fuel aromatic hydrocarbons. The microbial consortium, particularly the genus Acidocella, could potentially serve as an effective inoculum for remediation of diesel fuel polluted sites.
