Natural, low-cost adsorbents for toxic Pb(II) ion sequestration from (waste) water: A state-of-the-art review

Peter Olusakin Oladoye

Summary: Amongst various wastewater treatment approaches, adsorption is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for removing Pb(II) ions from contaminated water. This review selected and evaluated about 227 research and review based publications on adsorption-based studies using different materials as adsorbents of Pb (II) ions. The results showed that unmodified and modified agro-based adsorbents exhibited the highest Pb(II) adsorption capacity compared to other types of adsorbents, indicating their potential for further exploration.

An assessment of level of heavy metals pollution in the water, sediment and aquatic organisms: A perspective of tackling environmental threats for food security

Jeganathan Pandiyan et al.

Summary: Pollution is severely threatening wetland habitats with heavy metals such as Hg, Cr, Co being higher in sediment, Ni and Cd in benthic species, Cu and Pb in crabs, and Zn in fishes. The correlation analysis between metals from different sources showed complex relationships, with sediment serving as a major influence on metal accumulation in biotic species.

Summary: This study compared the effects of ashing and pyrolysis treatments on the hyperaccumulation plant Sedum plumbizincicola's Cd and Zn content. The results showed that pyrolysis was more effective in reducing the bioavailability and leachability of Cd and Zn from the plant biomass.

Contamination Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soil, in the Liwa Area (UAE)

Ahmed A. Al-Taani et al.

Summary: The study revealed that heavy metal levels in agricultural soils in the Liwa area of the UAE are generally low, with sources including agrochemicals, atmospheric dust, and traffic-related metals. Non-crustal sources contribute to high enrichment of Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cr in soils. Only Cd showed moderate contamination, while other heavy metals were found to have low contamination levels.
