Insecticide exposure affects intergenerational patterns of DNA methylation in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata

Kristian Brevik et al.

Summary: Insecticide use is a prevalent selective force in modern agroecosystems, leading to rapid evolution of resistance in insect herbivores. Exposure to sublethal doses of insecticides may trigger heritable changes in DNA methylation, potentially facilitating the emergence of resistant phenotypes. This study on the Colorado potato beetle found that insecticide exposure resulted in decreased global DNA methylation levels, particularly within genes associated with insecticide resistance, suggesting that epigenetics may play a role in insecticide resistance and evolution.

Single and combined effects of microplastics, pyrethroid and food resources on the life-history traits and microbiome of Chironomus riparius

Javier Edo Varg et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to microplastics and esfenvalerate negatively impacted the development and survival of Chironomus riparius, with effects varying between different food levels. Microbiome diversity was affected by microplastic exposure, while the relative abundances of top phyla were significantly impacted under high food levels. Lower food levels intensified the negative effects of exposure to microplastics, esfenvalerate, and their combination on life-history traits and microbiota.

Multi-generational exposure to fipronil, 2,4-D, and their mixtures in Chironomus sancticaroli: Biochemical, individual, and population endpoints*

Thandy Junio da Silva Pinto et al.

Summary: The study conducted on three generations of Chironomus sancticaroli exposed to fipronil, 2,4-D, and their mixtures showed that the pesticides affected various life stages of the chironomids, leading to a decrease in population, altered gender ratios, and reduced reproductive capacity. Prolonged exposure to these pesticides can disrupt natural populations of the exposed organisms and impact ecosystem functioning.

Chronic pesticide exposure elicits a subtle carry-over effect on the metabolome of Aurelia coerulea ephyrae

Carolina Olguin-Jacobson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the carry-over effects on Aurelia coerulea jellyfish, detecting subtle effects in two metabolites. Although these carry-over effects were not immediately reflected in other response variables, they could potentially have negative physiological consequences on the jellyfish in the long-term.

Short-term intake of deltamethrin-contaminated fruit, even at low concentrations, induces testicular damage in fruit-eating bats (Artibeus lituratus)

Jerusa Maria de Oliveira et al.

Summary: Research shows that exposure to DTM has harmful effects on the reproductive function of Neotropical fruit-eating bats, potentially leading to cell degeneration. This has important implications for seed dispersal and reforestation in the Neotropical forests.

Detrimental effects of pyriproxyfen on the detoxification and abilities of Belostoma anurum to prey upon Aedes aegypti larvae

Wilson R. Valbon et al.

Summary: The study found that sublethally-exposed nymphs of the giant water bug exhibited reduced prey capture ability on mosquito larvae and decreased enzyme activities involved in detoxication processes. While pyriproxyfen was more toxic to Aedes aegypti larvae than to Belostoma anurum nymphs, the effects of exposure at different concentrations varied between the two species.

Transgenerational exposure to warming reduces the sensitivity to a pesticide under warming

Shandong Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different exposure durations to warming on pesticide sensitivity in mosquito larvae. Results showed that transgenerational and developmental warming were energetically more stressful than acute warming, and exposure to chlorpyrifos decreased heat tolerance, diving responsiveness, and diving time. The impact of chlorpyrifos was lower at 24 degrees Celsius than at 20 degrees Celsius, suggesting that the expected increase in toxicity at 24 degrees Celsius was overruled by pesticide degradation.

Phenotypic plasticity, canalisation and developmental stability of Triatoma infestans wings: effects of a sublethal application of a pyrethroid insecticide

Julieta Nattero et al.

Summary: The study showed that exposure to a sublethal dose of pyrethroid insecticide affected the wing size and shape of Triatoma infestans, leading to larger, less symmetrical, and less canalised wings in the treated insects. Treated individuals exhibited higher genetic variation, individual variation, and fluctuating asymmetry compared to control individuals.
