Probing the chemical complexity of tires: Identification of potential tire-borne water contaminants with high-resolution mass spectrometry

Kathrin Mueller et al.

Summary: The study found that organic leachables from tire wear particles could pose potential risks to the aquatic environment, with many unknown chemicals entering water bodies. The polarity and leaching potential of organic substances are of concern, with some leachables having the potential to cause environmental water contamination.

The diverse metal composition of plastic items and its implications

Philipp Klockner et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the metal and metalloid content of plastic items from urban, freshwater and marine environments, as well as from household items and electric supplies, revealing that most metals had a content below 1 mg/kg and did not exceed legal limits, with iron and zinc having the highest contents. Investigation suggested that pigments were the likely source of metals in plastics, and compared to natural and anthropogenic materials in rivers and oceans, the metal content in plastic items was within the same order of magnitude.

Effect of environmentally relevant concentrations of potentially toxic microplastic on coastal copepods

Marja Koski et al.

Summary: The study found that at environmentally relevant concentrations, the tire wear particles (TWP) currently measured in the ocean environment are unlikely to pose a threat to common coastal copepods. However, when the TWP concentration exceeds MP concentrations in coastal waters by more than 100 times, the type, concentration, food concentration, and feeding mode of copepods interact to influence feeding and pellet production.

Beate Baensch-Baltruschat et al.

Summary: This study calculated the emissions of tyre wear particles annually generated on the German road network and considered the environmental entry paths including releases to ambient air, soils, and surface waters. There was also a focus on road runoff treatment differentiated into sewage systems in urban areas and non-urban roads.

Summary: This study characterized the specific physical and chemical properties of individual TRWP using analytical techniques such as SEM/EDX mapping and ToF-SIMS mapping. Comprehensive characterization of tire and road wear particles in highway tunnel road dust by use of size and density fractionation

Philipp Klockner et al.

Summary: Through fractionation and analysis of tunnel road dust, it was found that TRWP content was high and mainly concentrated in the 20-50 mm size fraction, while organic tire constituents were mainly concentrated in the smallest size fraction. Biological analysis showed that solvent extracts from size and density fractions had effects on the arylhydrocarbon receptor and the adaptive response to oxidative stress.

Organic Markers of Tire and Road Wear Particles in Sediments and Soils: Transformation Products of Major Antiozonants as Promising Candidates

Philipp Kloeckner et al.

Summary: This study identified three organic compounds as suitable quantitative markers for TRWPs through non-target screening and liquid-chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry identification. These compounds showed a linear response in standard addition experiments and were correlated with TRWP contents in environmental samples, suggesting their potential as markers for TRWP quantification. The use of organic markers would allow for easy quantification of TRWPs with traditional tandem MS equipment in organic trace analytical laboratories, facilitating data generation on TRWP occurrence in various environmental matrices.
