Elemental iron: reduction of pertechnetate in the presence of silica and periodicity of precipitated nano-structures

Daria Boglaienko et al.

Summary: The presence of silica enhances the efficiency of TcO4- reduction by Fe-0 due to inhibited transformation of iron oxyhydroxide into non-stoichiometric magnetite. Microscopic evaluation reveals unique morphologies of iron minerals in the presence and absence of silica, suggesting that iron dissolution/re-precipitation is a rhythmical reaction-diffusion process related to geological phenomena.
