Removal of contaminants of emerging concern from multicomponent systems using carbon dioxide activated biochar from lignocellulosic feedstocks

Ivan Kozyatnyk et al.

Summary: The adsorption efficiency of six CECs onto activated biochars from different lignocellulosic feedstocks was influenced by the porosity and ash content of the biochars as well as the hydrophobic properties of the CECs. The study found that activated wheat straw biochar with high ash content showed the highest adsorption for caffeine and chloramphenicol, while activated softwood biochar with well-developed mesoporosity and low ash content exhibited the highest adsorption for bisphenol A and triclosan.

The addition of biochar as a sustainable strategy for the remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments

Francesco Bianco et al.

Summary: Biochar is proposed as an innovative and sustainable technology for remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments, mainly through sorption mechanisms. The use of biochar can significantly improve the efficiency of PAH removal from sediments, especially when used in combination with multi-PAH systems and high dosages. Additionally, biochar has shown to decrease PAH degradation during bioaugmentation and phytoremediation of sediments, but can increase degradation when used with nitrate as an electron acceptor in low-temperature conditions.

Ayse Mulla Birer et al.

Summary: Sewage sludge can be converted into biochar through pyrolysis for solid-phase extraction applications. Different modifications to the biochar result in samples with varying hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties for the extraction of target analytes. Experimental results show that the recovery and efficiency of solid-phase extraction vary depending on the type of biochar used.
