Characterization of dissolved organic matter and carbon release from wetland plants for enhanced nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands for low C-N wastewater treatment

Yucong Zheng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that alkaline treatment and alkaline-heated treatment significantly enhance the denitrification promotion capacity of plant carbon sources, prolong the duration of high denitrification rate, and increase nitrogen removal rates in constructed wetlands. The main components of dissolved organic matter released from the treated carbon sources are humic acid-like, tyrosine-like, and tryptophan-like, which are highly bioavailable.

Magnetic biochars have lower adsorption but higher separation effectiveness for Cd2+ from aqueous solution compared to nonmagnetic biochars

Fei Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetic and nonmagnetic biochars were compared for their adsorption capabilities, revealing that magnetization reduced the adsorption capacities due to decreased importance of cation-exchange and C pi-coordination in the biochars. This reduction in adsorption capacity suggests that conventional biochar may be more effective in adsorbing Cd2+ than magnetized biochar. Further research on magnetic biochars as sustainable alternatives for remediation of Cd-contaminated environments is recommended.

Fe/Al (hydr)oxides engineered biochar for reducing phosphorus leaching from a fertile calcareous soil

Yutao Peng et al.

Summary: The study developed an Fe/Al (hydr)oxides modified biochar (FA-BC) to reduce P leaching in calcareous soils, demonstrating its higher efficiency in P adsorption compared to raw biochar. The application of FA-BC significantly decreased total P leaching, while maintaining adequate levels of bioavailable P in the soil. Chemical sequestration tests and analyses further showed the transformation of labile Ca-P fractions into stabilized Fe/Al-P complexes, highlighting the superior P retention ability of FA-BC amended soils.

Metal chloride-loaded biochar for phosphorus recovery: Noteworthy roles of inherent minerals in precursor

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, composite biochars were prepared to recover phosphorus from wastewater, showing that different mineral contents in biowastes can affect P sorption and precipitation. Loading of FeCl3 and MgCl2 improved the P adsorption capacity of biochar, but the choice of metal chloride should be based on the inherent minerals in the biowastes.

Effect of algae on phosphorus immobilization by lanthanum-modified zeolite

Xiaodi Li et al.

Summary: The study found that algae have an impact on the performance of phosphorus-inactivating agents, but even in the presence of algae, lanthanum modified zeolite (LMZ) is still effective in reducing the concentration of dissolved inorganic phosphorus in water. The addition of LMZ can lower the risk of phosphorus release and improve the effectiveness of phosphorus-inactivating agents.

Arsenic immobilization and removal in contaminated soil using zero-valent iron or magnetic biochar amendment followed by dry magnetic separation

Jining Li et al.

Summary: The study found that ZVI amendment significantly reduced As leaching and was more effective in reducing the phytoavailability of As in soil compared to magnetic biochar amendment. Plant growth experiments showed that ZVI amendment enhanced ryegrass growth and biomass, while magnetic biochar amendment had a negative impact on ryegrass root growth. Dry magnetic separation techniques showed that a significant portion of As could be permanently removed from ZVI and magnetic biochar amended soils, with As bound to amorphous Fe oxides being the main extracted fraction.

Phosphorus immobilization in water and sediment using iron-based materials: A review

Qipeng Wang et al.

Summary: Excessive phosphorus in water and sediment can lead to eutrophication, posing potential risks to drinking water safety and aquatic ecosystem sustainability. Iron-based materials show high efficiency in phosphorus immobilization due to their strong affinity with phosphorus, low cost, easy availability, and environmentally friendly properties. Combining iron-containing materials with other assisting materials is a good strategy to enhance phosphorus fixation efficiency and selectivity.
