Effects of aging and reduction processes on Cr toxicity to wheat root elongation in Cr(VI) spiked soils

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the phytotoxicity to wheat root elongation in different soils across China and examined the biogeochemical processes of added Cr(VI). The results showed that soil properties, such as pH, organic matter, clay, cation exchange capacity, and amorphous Fe oxides, affected the toxicity of Cr. Wheat root elongation was found to be more sensitive to extracted Cr(VI) than Cr(III) after 105 days of incubation. A kinetic model indicated that pH, clay, and amorphous Fe/Al oxides played key roles in the aging and reduction processes of Cr(VI), while organic matter and cation exchange capacity greatly affected the aging process of Cr(III).

Association of prenatal exposure to cadmium with neurodevelopment in children at 2 years of age: The Japan Environment and Children's Study

Chaochen Ma et al.

Summary: Prenatal cadmium exposure was negatively associated with neurodevelopment in boys, in children whose mothers smoked, and in children born to mothers with gestational diabetes. Further studies in other populations are needed to confirm our findings.

Application of DGT/DIFS to assess bioavailable Cd to maize and its release in agricultural soils

Rui Chen et al.

Summary: Tianjin, as an important maize production region in China, has a long history of soil cadmium contamination due to sewage irrigation. The study found that while soil samples in the region exceeded background Cd values, maize samples had Cd levels below pollution control values, possibly due to soil pH and organic matter content. DGT measurements of bioavailable Cd correlated well with Cd levels in maize grains.

Impact of cadmium pollution on food safety and human health

Ibha Suhani et al.

Summary: Modern urbanization and industrial activities have raised concerns about heavy metal pollution, particularly cadmium which harms almost all life forms with no biological function. It enters ecosystems through natural and anthropogenic sources, impacting different trophic levels in the food chain and raising concerns for food safety and human health. The bioavailability, bioaccessibility, and accumulation of cadmium in soil-plant systems are key factors driving its transfer to different trophic levels, affecting cellular and molecular alterations.

A preliminary study on heavy metal pollutants chrome (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in sediments and beach morning glory vegetation (Ipomoea pes-caprae) from Dasun Estuary, Rembang, Indonesia

Harmesa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of heavy metals Cr, Cd, and Pb on sediments and vegetation in the Dasun estuary, Indonesia. The results showed that Cd concentrations were relatively high, possibly originating from batik industry waste. Additionally, the beach morning glory vegetation was found to have a high ability to absorb Cd, making it a potential bioindicator for heavy metals in the environment.
