Nitrogen-incorporation activates NiFeOx catalysts for efficiently boosting oxygen evolution activity and stability of BiVO4 photoanodes

Beibei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that nitrogen-doping can efficiently activate NiFeOx catalysts to enhance the oxygen evolution activity and stability of BiVO4 photoanodes. The electron-enriched Ni sites donated electrons to V sites of BiVO4, while the Fe sites promoted the oxygen-evolution activity. This work provides a promising strategy for optimizing OER catalysts and constructing highly efficient and stable PEC water splitting devices.

General and Robust Photothermal-Heating-Enabled High-Efficiency Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Bing He et al.

Summary: The performance of photoanodes in PEC water splitting can be significantly enhanced by sandwiching a photothermal Co3O4 layer between a BiVO4 film and an FeOOH/NiOOH electrocatalyst sheet. This strategy improves light absorption, charge transfer, and water oxidation kinetics simultaneously, leading to superior photocurrent density and efficiency. The use of a variety of metal sulfides, nitrides, and phosphides as heaters can also yield high-performance photoanodes.

Steering electron transfer using interface engineering on front-illuminated robust BiVO4 photoanodes

Rui-Ting Gao et al.

Summary: Research shows that front solar illumination is crucial for designing tandem structures in photoelectrochemical water splitting using BiVO4. To reduce interfacial recombination, a new strategy involves applying a PdO layer functionalized SnO2 interface as an electron transport layer. Additionally, a trace amount of Pd was doped into the bulk BiVO4 to modify the electronic structure.
