Light-Powered Autonomous Flagella-Like Motion of Molecular Crystal Microwires

Fei Tong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that (Z)-DVAM molecular crystalline microwires can exhibit continuous oscillatory motion when exposed to a combination of ultraviolet and visible light, mimicking the behavior of biological flagella. This is the first example of molecular crystals showing complex oscillatory behavior under continuous irradiation, with rotational frequency depending on light intensity and polarization.

Light-Driven Rapid Peeling of Photochromic Diarylethene Single Crystals

Masato Tamaoki et al.

Summary: The article discusses a rapidly photoresponsive behavior exhibited by photochromic diarylethene crystals, including peeling, jumping, and cracking, under different photoirradiation conditions. The study explores the details of the rapid photoresponsive peeling based on molecular packings and the crystal size. These crystals show potential applications as macroscopic photomechanical actuators driven by molecular machinery.

(9-Isocyanoanthracene)gold(I) Complexes Exhibiting Two Modes of Crystal Jumps by Different Structure Change Mechanisms

Kenta Kato et al.

Summary: The first examples of single crystals exhibiting salient effects by different structure change mechanisms are reported, including photodimerization reaction-induced photosalient effect and anisotropic thermal contraction-induced thermosalient effect. Multiple jumps of crystals by cooling and then UV irradiation are demonstrated for the programmed motion of molecular crystals.

Photothermally Driven High-Speed Crystal Actuation and Its Simulation

Shodai Hasebe et al.

Summary: This study reports on photothermally driven fast-bending actuation of a crystal, with successful simulation of the driving process. Thick crystals can bend quickly, while thin crystals bend due to photoisomerization. High-frequency bending is also achievable through the photothermal effect.
