By measuring the adsorption and desorption behavior of activated carbon filters on fuel vapor mixtures over time, it was found that dry regeneration can enhance their long-term suitability. This study helps explain the increased filter failures due to bioethanol blends and moist regeneration fluid.
Since 2011, 5 to 10 vol % of bioethanol are added to fossil gasoline used for Otto engines. In order to be able to examine the influence of the bioethanol additive on the functionality of fuel vapor retaining systems, a special test facility was designed. With this facility, long-term measurements over several weeks are possible, so that the adsorption and desorption behavior of the activated carbon filter can also be recorded in detail for a fuel vapor mixture. When regenerating with dry flushing nitrogen the results show their long-term suitability. The basic understanding gained in this process could explain the increased failure of the filters with bioethanol blends and moist regeneration fluid.
