Delayed mixing of iron-laden tributaries in large boreal rivers: Implications for iron transport, water quality and monitoring

C. W. Cuss et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the impact of delayed tributary mixing in large boreal rivers on the properties and transport of Fe-bearing colloids, leading to significant differences in trace element concentrations. Adequate water quality monitoring in these rivers requires high-resolution spatial sampling due to the sensitivity of mixing behavior and water quality to hydrologic changes. Traditional monitoring approaches may be rendered unsuitable due to fluctuations in water quality and associated mixing behaviors.
