Gas-solid mixing and heat transfer performance in alternating spout deflection

Yuanhe Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, the alternating spout deflection (ASD) is compared with the spout-fluidisation (SF) flow pattern in terms of gas-solid hydrodynamics, mixing, and heat transfer performance using a Computer Fluid Dynamic-Discrete Element Method (CFDDEM) model. The ASD shows advantages in terms of particle packing state, mixing performance, and heat transfer efficiency compared to SF.

CFD-DEM modelling of the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed

Zhouzun Xie et al.

Summary: In this work, a smoothed volume distribution model (SVDM) was developed to simulate the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed based on the unresolved CFD-DEM framework. The SVDM method allows a high-resolution mesh and can achieve a high efficiency and applicability compared to the DPVM method. The effects of inlet fine concentration and solid/fine size ratio on fines migration behavior were also studied, revealing insights into fine powder holdup and migration mechanisms.

Fluidity characteristic of granular materials within low frequency dynamics

L. H. Tong et al.

Summary: Experimental studies have shown that under low-frequency vibration conditions, the fluidity of granular packing is enhanced with increasing vibration amplitude and frequency. A simple fluidity model based on Maxwell viscoelastic rheology can effectively describe the strain time evolution of granular systems under low-frequency vibrations. The frequency has a completely opposite effect on aging and rejuvenation of the granular system, while increasing vibration amplitude and frequency weaken the effective viscosity of the granular system.

Development and validation of SuperDEM-CFD coupled model for simulating non-spherical particles hydrodynamics in fluidized beds

Xi Gao et al.

Summary: A new SuperDEM-CFD coupled model was developed for simulating the hydrodynamics of non-spherical particles in fluidized beds. The model includes algorithms for modeling and distributing non-spherical particles, as well as drag models that consider particle orientation and cell voidage effects. Experimental validation was conducted, and large-scale simulations demonstrated the solver's capabilities for industrial-relevant flows.

Simulations of biomass pyrolysis using glued-sphere CFD-DEM with 3-D intra-particle models

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: This research utilized a glued-sphere computational fluid dynamic discrete element method to investigate the effects of biomass particle shapes and sizes on pyrolysis. The study revealed significant influences of surface areas and mass distributions on interphase heat transfer and chemical reactions, with neglectable intra-particle heat transfer for certain conditions. Different reactor types were simulated to analyze conversion distributions, showing the best balance between uniform and fast conversion in the fluidized bed.

Summary: In this study, a detailed kinetic scheme of biomass pyrolysis was assessed in multiscale simulations of a single-particle pyrolyzer and a pilot-scale entrained flow pyrolyzer. The simulations indicated that nonisothermal particles matched experimental data better than isothermal particles, providing insights into biomass pyrolysis kinetics development and pyrolyzer multiscale simulation for future studies.
