Fundamentals, On-Going Advances and Challenges of Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Zongkui Kou et al.

Summary: Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECR) is an attractive approach for synthesizing useful fuels and chemical feedstocks using renewable electricity as the energy source. Discussions on reaction pathways and catalyst design have the potential to enhance efficiency and selectivity of product formation, but challenges and complications still remain in this rapidly-advancing research frontier.

Dynamic Activation of Adsorbed Intermediates via Axial Traction for the Promoted Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Xinyue Wang et al.

Summary: An axial traction strategy was developed to optimize the electronic structure of the M-N-4 moiety, leading to atomically dispersed nickel sites coordinated with four nitrogen atoms and one axial oxygen atom embedded within the carbon matrix (Ni-N-4-O/C). This Ni-N-4-O/C electrocatalyst exhibited excellent CO2RR performance with a high CO Faradic efficiency close to 100% at -0.9 V, maintaining the CO FE above 90% in a wide potential window. The superior CO2RR activity is attributed to the axial traction effect induced by the Ni-N-4-O active moiety.

Isolated copper single sites for high-performance electroreduction of carbon monoxide to multicarbon products

Haihong Bao et al.

Summary: Electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction is a promising strategy for producing high-value multicarbon compounds, but low selectivities and Faradaic efficiencies are common. In this study, a single-atom copper catalyst supported on MXene showed high performance and stability in CO reduction.

Selective and High Current CO2 Electro-Reduction to Multicarbon Products in Near-Neutral KCl Electrolytes

Xiao Zhang et al.

Summary: A stable and selective electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to C2+ products was achieved using a Cu electrocatalyst on a hydrophobic gas-diffusion layer (GDL) electrode in near-neutral KCl electrolytes. The instability of the catalyst in alkaline media under cathodic CO2RR conditions was largely suppressed by using a near-neutral electrolyte, showcasing the potential for long-term stability in CO2RR applications.

A high throughput optical method for studying compositional effects in electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

Jeremy L. Hitt et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the discovery of efficient catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction, with Au6Ag2Cu2 and Au4Zn3Cu3 identified as the most active compositions among four elements. These ternary electrocatalysts showed significantly higher activity than binary combinations, leading to a 5-fold increase in current density. Additionally, the high Faradaic efficiency for CO2 reduction to CO was observed, despite the ternary catalysts being less effective for hydrogen evolution reaction compared to pure Au.
