Nanoscale Interactions of Humic Acid and Minerals Reveal Mechanisms of Carbon Protection in Soil

Menghan Yu et al.

Summary: The concentrations of terrestrially sourced dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic ecosystems have increased in recent decades. The mechanisms of organic matter-mineral interactions, one major pathway for soil organic matter sequestration, are not well understood. This study investigated the effect of calcium phosphate mineralization on humic acid (HA) fixation in simulated soil solutions with or without clay mineral montmorillonite (Mt). It was found that Mt promoted nucleation and crystallization of calcium phosphate, contributing to the long-term persistence and accumulation of HA. The findings highlight the crucial role of Mt in DOM sequestration and suggest knowledge gaps that can improve soil C sequestration.

Engineering Cationic Sulfur-Doped Co3O4 Architectures with Exposing High-Reactive (112) Facets for Photoelectrocatalytic Water Purification

Yanwei Di et al.

Summary: The study successfully constructed hierarchical cationic sulfur-doped Co3O4 architectures with highly exposed (112) facets by introducing L-cysteine, showing superior PEC activities and long-term stability. The highly exposed reactive facets promoted carrier transport and diffusion during the PEC process, while cationic sulfur doping on the lattice of Co3O4 narrowed the band gap to extend the photoadsorption range and improve the lifetime of active species. This work proves that the SC-1.8 architectures with highly exposed (112) facets are a promising PEC catalyst and presents a new strategy for constructing an active PEC catalyst.

Identifying the Activity Origin of a Cobalt Single-Atom Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Using Supervised Learning

Xinghui Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the activity of graphene-based Co single-atom catalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction is attributed to their edge sites, and edge-rich Co single atoms were synthesized based on theoretical results. By applying supervised learning techniques, the measured synchrotron spectrum of Co single atoms was interpreted, showing consistent local environments with Athena fitting. Moreover, the edge-rich Co single-atom catalysts exhibit better electrocatalytic performance than commercial Pt/C at high current density, indicating the potential for rational design and structural analysis of nanocatalysts.

Enhanced performance of Mo2P monolayer as lithium-ion battery anode materials by carbon and nitrogen doping: a first principles study

Xinghui Liu et al.

Summary: By using density functional theory computations, the potential of carbon- and nitrogen-doped Mo2P layered materials as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries was explored. These materials have exceptional stabilities, high electronic conductivity, and low Li-ion diffusion barriers, making them promising candidates for high-performance LIB anode materials.
