Assessment andmanagement of lake eutrophication: A case study in Lake Erhai, China

Song-Shun Lin et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the sources and mechanisms that trigger eutrophication in lakes, and discusses effective tools for evaluating the degree of eutrophication. Using Lake Erhai as a case study, it was found in a mesotrophic state with N and P co-limitation before 2006, and only P limitation since then. Effective measures for maintaining sustainable development in the watershed and a framework for an early warning system utilizing GIS and RS technologies for preventing eutrophication are proposed.

Nanoscale zerovalent iron, carbon nanotubes and biochar facilitated the phytoremediation of cadmium contaminated sediments by changing cadmium fractions, sediments properties and bacterial community structure

Xiaomin Gong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the use of starch-stabilized nanoscale zerovalent iron, multiwall carbon nanotubes, and tea waste-derived biochar facilitated the phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated sediments by Boehmeria nivea. These materials altered the forms of Cd, sediment properties, and bacterial community structure, promoting plant growth and enhancing Cd bioavailability.

Structural Evolution of Lanthanum Hydroxides during Long-Term Phosphate Mitigation: Effect of Nanoconfinement

Yanyang Zhang et al.

Summary: Lanthanum (La)-based materials are effective in removing phosphate (P) from water to prevent eutrophication. In this study, the evolution of La-P structures and the effects of nanoconfinement on the structural transformation of LaPO4 were explored over a 25-day period. The results showed that nanoconfinement led to faster and more extensive structural transitions, as well as facilitating the reverse transformation of LaPO4 back to La(OH)(3). This work provides a scientific basis for the use of La-based nanocomposites in phosphate mitigation, immobilization, and recycle applications.

Facet-dependent phosphate adsorptive reactivity by lanthanum hydroxides of different crystal structure: Role of surface hydroxyl groups

Minglu Wang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the crystal structure-reactivity relationship of La(OH)(3) nanoparticles, with three different nanomaterials synthesized and characterized. The amount of -LaOH groups on the materials was positively correlated with their phosphate adsorption ability, indicating their importance in enhancing phosphate affinity. The results provide insights into the role of facets on La (OH)(3) crystals in water treatment applications.

Contrasting effects and mode of dredging and in situ adsorbent amendment for the control of sediment internal phosphorus loading in eutrophic lakes

Hongbin Yin et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) addition and dredging on controlling sediment phosphorus (P) loading in eutrophic water bodies. The results showed that LMB addition was more effective in reducing sediment P fluxes and pore water P concentrations compared to dredging in the long term.

Kinetic modelling of the uranium biosorption by Deinococcus radiodurans biofilm

T. Manobala et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the kinetic modeling of uranium biosorption by Deinococcus radiodurans biofilm biomass, indicating the process is spontaneous and exothermic. The sorption of U(VI) by D. radiodurans biofilm biomass is suggested to follow a pseudosecond-order reaction. Chemical modifications in surface functional groups of the biofilm biomass significantly impact uranium binding capacity.

The combined effects of macrophytes (Vallisneria denseserrulata) and a lanthanum-modified bentonite on water quality of shallow eutrophic lakes: A mesocosm study

Xiumei Zhang et al.

Summary: The combined treatment of submerged macrophytes and Phoslock (R) showed stronger improvement in water quality compared to individual measures, especially in reducing soluble reactive phosphorus. The treatment also led to transformation of phosphorus forms in different sediment layers, potentially accelerating lake restoration process.

Phosphorus bioavailability and the diversity of microbial community in sediment in response to modified calcium peroxide ceramsite capping

Jing Zhou et al.

Summary: The bioavailability of phosphorus is closely related to the microbial community in sediments, and plays a significant role in the release of sedimentary phosphorus. In a 62-day experiment, capping with modified calcium peroxide ceramsite (MCPC) at different dosages showed a decrease in disappeared phosphorus under MCPC capping, as well as a decrease in dissolved inorganic phosphorus and Fe(II) concentrations compared to the control. The microbial community structures showed an increase in Proteobacteria and Nitrospirae under MCPC capping, indicating a negative relationship between microbial diversity and bioavailable phosphorus under this condition.

Phosphorus immobilization in water and sediment using iron-based materials: A review

Qipeng Wang et al.

Summary: Excessive phosphorus in water and sediment can lead to eutrophication, posing potential risks to drinking water safety and aquatic ecosystem sustainability. Iron-based materials show high efficiency in phosphorus immobilization due to their strong affinity with phosphorus, low cost, easy availability, and environmentally friendly properties. Combining iron-containing materials with other assisting materials is a good strategy to enhance phosphorus fixation efficiency and selectivity.

Investigation of phosphate removal mechanisms by a lanthanum hydroxide adsorbent using p-XRD, FTIR and XPS

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: Macroscopic batch experiments and microscopic spectroscopic characterization were employed to study the phosphate adsorption process onto lanthanum hydroxide adsorbent. The results showed that the relatively low La release after phosphate adsorption suggested the formation of surface co-precipitation of lanthanum phosphate. The maximum adsorption capacities and surface configurations of lanthanum hydroxide varied at different pH values during the adsorption of phosphate.
