Application of near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) in an in-situ analysis of the stability of the surface-supported metal-organic framework HKUST-1 in water, methanol and pyridine atmospheres

Marit Kjaervik et al.

Summary: Surface-supported metal-organic frameworks HKUST-1 were used to develop a near ambient pressure XPS approach to investigate interaction with water, methanol, and pyridine atmospheres. The peak shapes in the photoelectron spectra were found to depend on charge compensation efficiency, with reduced copper observed when exposed to water vapor and pyridine. Stern support was found for saturation of Cu(II) percentage with increasing exposure time, and ongoing work aims to elucidate the mechanism of Cu(II) reduction to Cu(I) mediated by water and pyridine in HKUST-1.

Adsorption of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds (NHC) on soil minerals: Quinoline as an example

D. Okhrimenko et al.

Summary: Understanding the adsorption behavior of nitrogen heterocyclic compounds (NHCs) on soil minerals is essential for designing more efficient wastewater treatment and soil/groundwater remediation systems. This study found that kaolinite in sandstone significantly contributes to the adsorption of quinoline, a representative NHC, with adsorption peaking at pH around 6 and decreasing with increasing ionic strength. The results confirm the effectiveness of sandstones and clays in removing NHCs from waste and groundwaters.

Preparation of nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanosphere/graphene composite aerogel for efficient removal of quinoline from wastewater

Weiwei Kang et al.

Summary: The nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanosphere/graphene composite aerogel (HCNS/NGA) prepared in this work showed high quinoline adsorption performance and efficient regeneration. The unique sphere-sheet mutual support structure and large specific surface area of HCNS/NGA contributed to its excellent adsorption capacity. HCNS/NGA also exhibited easy solid-liquid separation and high adsorption capacity retention after multiple regeneration cycles, making it a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Adsorption and reduction of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution using cost-effective caffeic acid functionalized corn starch

Fenglei Liu et al.

Summary: A bio-adsorbent DACS-CA was developed by immobilizing caffeic acid on dialdehyde corn starch for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Characterization analysis indicated a redox reaction between Cr(VI) and the bio-adsorbent, where Cr(VI) was initially loaded via electrostatic interaction, partially converted into Cr(III), and then immobilized on DACS-CA's carboxyl groups.

Summary: Water quality is crucial for the well-being of living organisms on Earth, but increasing human population and industrialization are rapidly contaminating water resources. Clean drinking water is becoming scarce globally, especially in developing countries. Therefore, there is an urgent need for cost-effective, accessible, and eco-friendly technologies to meet the high demand for clean water.

Adsorption characteristics of Pb(II) species on the sulfidized malachite surface and its response to flotation

Han Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of Pb(II) on the flotation of sulfidized malachite. Results showed that Pb(II) treatment increased the floatability and recovery rate of the malachite, by adsorbing on the mineral surface and promoting collector adsorption. Analytical techniques like XPS and ToF-SIMS confirmed the positive effect of Pb(II) on malachite sulfidization.
