Molecular behavior of CO2 hydrate growth in the presence of dissolvable ionic organics

Yi Lu et al.

Summary: Hydration-based techniques involving ions and organics show that hydrate growth rate in solutions with methylene blue molecules may not accelerate with increasing subcooling, and unexpected amorphous cage clusters can disturb solute agglomeration. The exclusion of methylene blue molecules during hydrate growth, replaced by CO2, involves chloride ions participating in cage building with water molecules' oxygen atoms, indicating an interaction between methylene blue and hydrate cages. These findings contribute to understanding hydrate formation in systems with ion-containing organics and improving kinetics-dependent processes in separation applications.

Replacement in CH4-CO2 hydrate below freezing point based on abnormal self-preservation differences of CH4 hydrate

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Utilizing multi-defective ice to construct porous CO2 hydrate can improve the efficiency of CH4-CO2 hydrate replacement, providing a new method for CH4 recovery and CO2 sequestration. Experimental results showed that the replacement efficiency at 272.15 K was significantly higher than at 268.15 K, confirming the feasibility of the replacement concept.

Subsurface Carbon Dioxide Sequestration and Storage in Methane Hydrate Reservoirs Combined with Clean Methane Energy Recovery

Prashant Jadhawar et al.

Summary: This study investigates CO2 sequestration and storage into methane (CH4) hydrate sediments, examining the replacement of CH4 by CO2 in hydrates under varying thermodynamic conditions at both the macroscale and microscale levels. The results show high CH4 gas recovery within HSZ-II, while higher water saturation conditions diminish this recovery. In addition, significant CH4 production is obtained deep inside HSZ-I with the application of inhibitors. Our novel microscale micromodel evaluations reveal the release of CH4 gas through convection, slow CO2 diffusive mass transfer, and CO2-CH4 replacement within HSZ-I.

Summary: The study found that CO2 hydrate first occupies larger pores, leading to poorer pore homogeneity in sandstone. The permeability of samples decreased with hydrate formation and increased with hydrate dissociation, with higher permeability in formation compared to dissociation at the same hydrate saturation.

Organics-Coated Nanoclays Further Promote Hydrate Formation Kinetics

Jiafei Zhao et al.

Summary: The presence of organics-coated nanoclays in natural sediments can significantly reduce the induction time of CO2 hydrate formation, attributed to the negative charges and functional groups of the organics. This finding suggests a potentially sustainable promoting effect on hydrate formation through the unique properties of the nanoclays in complex natural environments.
