Microplastics in the environment: Occurrence, perils, and eradication

Surbhi Sharma et al.

Summary: Microplastics, with sizes smaller than 5 mm, are a major source of environmental pollution and pose hazards to marine species, birds, animals, soil creatures, and humans. This review discusses the damaging effects of microplastics on the environment and various removal techniques such as biodegradation, adsorption, and catalytic degradation. Advancements in methods like FTIR and SEM analysis are highlighted for monitoring structural changes during degradation processes.

A review of the removal of microplastics in global wastewater treatment plants: Characteristics and mechanisms

Weiyi Liu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the abundance and removal of microplastics in 38 wastewater treatment plants worldwide and found different characteristics of microplastics in different treatment technologies. The research revealed that filter-based treatment technologies showed the best removal efficiency for microplastics, and different types and sizes of microplastics were removed in different ways in various treatment processes.

New insights into the vertical distribution and microbial degradation of microplastics in urban river sediments

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics and the bacterial community assemblages in urban river sediments. The results showed that microplastics and associated microbial communities have vertical profiles in river sediments. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased in abundance and centrality from shallow to deep layers, suggesting a primary role in the degradation of microplastics in deep sediments.

Occurrence, fate and removal of microplastics as heavy metal vector in natural wastewater treatment wetland system

Dhruba Jyoti Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study investigated a freshwater wetland system in Eastern India and found a high concentration of microplastics and toxic metals in treatment ponds and associated wastewater canals. The presence of microplastics poses a risk to aquatic biota, with potential contamination of fish. The removal efficiency of microplastics in the treatment ponds was estimated to be 53%.

Occurrence and removal of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants and drinking water purification facilities: A review

Yan Laam Cheng et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are significant sources of microplastics, with high concentrations in influent but relatively high removal efficiencies. Disinfection shows potential for breaking down microplastics, while the role of drinking water purification facilities in microplastic removal remains inadequately understood.

The effect of number of tanks on water quality in rainwater harvesting systems under sudden contaminant input

Janith Dissanayake et al.

Summary: Rainwater harvesting is a sustainable solution for urban water crises. Using multiple tank systems can effectively improve water quality issues in single tank systems, and increasing the number of tanks can stabilize the particle mass reaching the final tank.

Transport and fate of microplastics in constructed wetlands: A microcosm study

Yuling Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fate and behavior of microplastics of different shapes and sizes in constructed wetlands. Microplastic removal rates were found to vary between different types of constructed wetlands, with horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands showing the highest removal rate. Microplastics tended to accumulate near the inlet area and biofilm attachment and physical filtration were identified as important factors in retention.

Fate and removal of microplastics in unplanted lab-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands

Qintong Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of biofilm, media type, and earthworms on the fate and removal of microplastics in constructed wetlands. It was found that biofilm, media type, and earthworms have some effects on the removal efficiency and distribution of microplastics in VFCWs. However, the impact of media grain size and earthworm presence on the removal efficiency of microplastics was minimal, while their effect on distribution was significant.
