Achieving 16.68% efficiency ternary as-cast organic solar cells

Ruijie Ma et al.

Summary: This article introduces highly efficient ternary OSCs based on PM6:BTP-ClBr1:BTP-2O-4Cl-C12, with 16.68% power conversion efficiency for as-cast device, relatively close to its annealed counterpart. The improved PCE of ternary device is mainly attributed to improved morphological properties including the more favorable materials miscibility, crystallinity, domain size and vertical phase separation. These results provide understanding and guidance for high-performance as-cast OSCs through the ternary strategy.

A History and Perspective of Non-Fullerene Electron Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells

Ardalan Armin et al.

Summary: Organic solar cells have evolved from relying on fullerenes as acceptors to the emergence of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) which have significantly improved cell efficiencies. However, NFAs challenge the traditional understanding of organic solar cell operation, requiring rethinking of morphology, charge generation, and recombination.

High-Efficiency Organic Photovoltaics using Eutectic Acceptor Fibrils to Achieve Current Amplification

Ming Zhang et al.

Summary: By utilizing the new physical properties of intimate eutectic mixing in nonfullerene-acceptor-based D-A(1)-A(2) ternary blends, the thin film morphology and electronic properties in organic solar cells are finely tuned to achieve significant enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE). The aligned cascading energy levels and suppressed recombination channels confirm efficient charge transfer and transport, leading to an improved PCE of 17.84%.

High mobility acceptor as third component enabling high-performance large area and thick active layer ternary solar cells

Hongtao Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports high-performance large-area and thick-film ternary organic solar cells by incorporating the high electron mobility IDIC into the PM6:IM-4F host blend. The optimized -100 nm-thick ternary OSCs with 10 wt% IDIC exhibit high power conversion efficiency and excellent tolerance to active layer thickness. These ternary OSCs have great potential for large-scale fabrication of highly-efficient thick-film OSCs for practical applications.

Enhancing photovoltaic performance via aggregation dynamics control in fused-ring electron acceptor

Jiayu Wang et al.

Summary: A new fused-ring electron acceptor FNIC3 with controlled aggregation behavior was synthesized, showing strong absorption in the 600-900 nm range. The aggregation of FNIC3 significantly influences the photovoltaic device parameters, with appropriate aggregation enhancing the power conversion efficiency. Aggregates formed under proper film formation time exhibit a higher PCE compared to those formed under short or long film formation time.

An unfused-ring acceptor with high side-chain economy enabling 11.17% as-cast organic solar cells

Fuqiang Du et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of side-chain engineering on nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) for optimizing their solubility and crystallinity in order to achieve high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs). The use of 7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazole (DCB) as an electron-donating core in designing unfused-ring acceptors (UFAs) with low weight ratios of side chains is highlighted. The resulting DCB-4F material exhibits higher solubility and promising efficiency in OSCs when compared to traditional analogues, showing potential for achieving highly efficient as-cast OSCs.
