Fluidization of micro-interconnected fluidized beds for chemical looping

Tianxu Shen et al.

Summary: The micro-interconnected fluidized bed (MIFB) was designed to improve the evaluation condition of oxygen carrier by reducing bed inventory and improving gas-solid distribution. The use of hematite as the oxygen carrier resulted in stable and flexible fluidization with internal perforated plates enhancing particle residence time. A different fluidization phenomenon was observed in the two-stage reactor, showing potential for extending oxygen carrier lifetime.

Unsteady flow regimes in arrow-shaped micro-mixers with different tilting angles

A. Mariotti et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mixing behavior of two arrow-shaped micro-mixers with different tilting angles at larger Reynolds numbers using experimental flow visualizations and direct numerical simulations. The configuration with a lower tilting angle of 10 degrees shows better global mixing performance compared to the one with a larger angle of 20 degrees.

Physical, thermal and micro-surface characteristics of PG76 binder incorporated with liquid chemical WMA additive

Suzielah Rahmad et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the Rediset additive can reduce the viscosity of the blends and modify their physical characteristics. Adhesion and boiling water tests showed that the adhesion properties of all blends are good under impact force but decrease in boiling water. Thermogravimetry analysis revealed that inclusion of WMA in PMB has no significant effect on the thermal stability of the new binders.

Heat transfer in binary polyatomic gas mixtures over the whole range of the gas rarefaction based on kinetic deterministic modeling

Christos Tantos et al.

Summary: In this study, the problem of heat conduction through binary mixtures of non-vibrating polyatomic gases is investigated by considering the internal degrees of freedom of gas molecules. The results show that there is a linear variation in the relative deviation between monatomic and polyatomic heat fluxes when the difference in molecular masses of the species is small, while a nonlinear behavior is observed for gases with significantly different molecular masses. The study also demonstrates that polyatomic gas mixtures cannot be accurately modeled using monatomic modeling.

SARS COV-2 virus-laden droplets coughed from deep lungs: Numerical quantification in a single-path whole respiratory tract geometry

Xiuhua April Si et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior and fate of respiratory droplets during coughs, finding that 2-mu m droplets have the highest exhalation fraction regardless of cough depths. A nonlinear relationship exists between the droplet exhalation fraction and cough depth due to complex deposition mechanisms and multiscale airway passages.

Prediction of droplet sizes in a T-junction microchannel: Effect of dispersed phase inertial forces

Santosh Kumar Jena et al.

Summary: The generation of monodispersed droplets in T-junction microchannels is influenced by forces from the continuous phase, dispersed phase, and interfacial forces. The theoretical analysis also takes into account the inertial forces from the dispersed phase, demonstrating that droplet size can be effectively described by non-dimensional numbers.

Junkyu Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigates the characteristics of vortical structures in T-shaped branches under the shear-thinning effect using a power-law fluid model. The results show three different flow structures, namely, steady, harmonic, and turbulent-like regimes, depending on the power-law index.

Mixing and transport enhancement in microchannels by electrokinetic flows with charged surface heterogeneity

Yifei Guan et al.

Summary: The study investigates electrokinetic flow in a microchannel driven by charged surface heterogeneity in the presence of an external electric field through three-dimensional simulations. It is found that the magnitude of the external electric field affects the mixing and transport enhancement of passive scalars by induced electrokinetic vortices.

Effect of self-assembly on fluorescence in magnetic multiphase flows and its application on the novel detection for COVID-19

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the magnetic field induced self-assembly processes of magnetic microparticles and nonmagnetic microparticles were experimentally investigated, revealing enhanced fluorescence in the inverse magnetic fluid and weakened fluorescence in the pure magnetic fluid. The advantages of the inverse magnetic fluid include low cost, no scattering effect, stable fluorescence intensity, and relatively low magnetic resistance.

Intensification of micromixing efficiency in a spinning disk reactor: Experimental investigation

Le-Bin Yao et al.

Summary: Improving the efficiency of liquid-liquid micromixing in the spinning disk reactor (SDR) can be achieved through enhancing the disk surface structure and pre-mixer type. The radial baffle and pre-mixer design significantly contribute to enhancing micromixing performance of the SDR.

The role of surfactants on the shape of confined droplets moving in circular microchannel

D. Ferraro et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of surfactants on the curvature of confined droplets flowing in circular channels, both with and without surfactants. It finds that the front curvature scales with the capillary number, while the rear meniscus curvature strongly depends on surfactant concentration and dispersion.
