Substituent-Controlled Tailoring of Chalcogen-Bonded Supramolecular Nanoribbons in the Solid State

Nicolas Biot et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the synthesis of supramolecular materials in the solid state through multiple hybrid interactions, achieving different solid-state arrangements based on the properties of the substituents. Incorporation of oxazole units on the Se- and Te-congeners led to consistent supramolecular ribbon-like organization at the solid state.

Iso-Tellurazolium-N-Phenoxides: A Family of Te•••O Chalcogen-Bonding Supramolecular Building Blocks

Peter C. Ho et al.

Summary: Substitution of the oxygen atom of isotellurazole N-oxide with hydroxyphenyl groups led to formation of molecules that aggregate through Te···O chalcogen bonding interactions. These molecules self-assemble in solution and can form either polymeric or macrocyclic aggregates depending on crystallization conditions. The Te···O chalcogen bond distances and energies in the macrocyclic aggregates are comparable to isotellurazole N-oxides.

Chalcogen Bonding Ion-Pair Cryptand Host Discrimination of Potassium Halide Salts

Andrew Docker et al.

Summary: A series of chalcogen, halogen, and hydrogen bonding heteroditopic macrobicyclic cryptands were studied for their recognition properties towards potassium halide ion-pairs, with the co-bound potassium cation found to be crucial in activating the bromide and iodide recognition. The sigma-hole mediated interaction significantly enhanced ion-pair binding behavior, particularly in the halogen bonding analogue. Incorporating a chelating chalcogen bonding donor motif improved selectivity towards KBr over KI in comparison to halogen and hydrogen bonding analogues.

Modulating Chalcogen Bonding and Halogen Bonding Sigma-Hole Donor Atom Potency and Selectivity for Halide Anion Recognition

Andrew Docker et al.

Summary: A series of acyclic anion receptors containing chalcogen bond (ChB) and halogen bond (XB) donors were described, showing a dramatic modulation in sigma-hole donor atom potency for anion recognition through systematic variation of the electronic-withdrawing nature of the aryl substituents. Incorporation of strongly electron-withdrawing perfluorophenyl units significantly enhanced the anion binding potency of the sigma-hole receptors, especially for ChB and XB receptors displaying over thirty-fold and eight-fold increase in chloride anion affinity, respectively. Linear free energy relationships for ChB based receptors revealed the halide anion recognition behavior of the tellurium donor is highly sensitive to local electronic environments, highlighting the opportunity to fine-tune anion affinity and selectivity in ChB-based receptor systems.

Halogen Bonding Tetraphenylethene Anion Receptors: Anion-Induced Emissive Aggregates and Photoswitchable Recognition

Andrew Docker et al.

Summary: A series of TPE derivatives functionalized with perfluoroaryl iodo-triazole halogen bond donors have been reported for anion recognition. These derivatives form luminescent nanoscale aggregates driven by anion coordination, serving as a powerful sensory mechanism for parts per billion concentration chloride sensing. The geometric isomers of these derivatives also act as unprecedented photoswitchable XB donor anion receptors, with the photostationary state composition modulated by the presence of a coordinating halide anion.

Highly Active Halogen Bonding and Chalcogen Bonding Chloride Transporters with Non-Protonophoric Activity

Laura E. Bickerton et al.

Summary: Synthetic anion transporters have shown great potential as potential anticancer agents and therapeutics for diseases associated with mis-regulation of protein anion channels. Highly active bidentate halogen bonding and chalcogen bonding anion carriers have been reported, demonstrating record nanomolar chloride transport activity and remarkably high chloride over proton/hydroxide selectivity. Computational studies suggest sigma-hole mediated anion recognition and desolvation as crucial for achieving high transport activity and selectivity in synthetic anionophores.

Halogen Bonding Heteroditopic Materials for Cooperative Sodium Iodide Binding and Extraction

Andrew Docker et al.

Summary: A series of novel heteroditopic halogen bonding (XB) receptor functionalised silica-based materials are investigated for extracting sodium halide ion-pair species from aqueous solution. Cooperative XB-mediated sodium halide ion-pair binding is crucial to the material's extraction capabilities, showing a two-fold enhancement in sodium iodide extraction efficiency compared to other functionalised silica materials.

Competing Effects of Chlorination on the Strength of Te...O Chalcogen Bonds Select the Structure of Mixed Supramolecular Macrocyclic Aggregates of Iso-Tellurazole N-Oxides

Peter C. Ho et al.

Summary: Chlorination of 3-methyl-5-phenyl-1,2-tellurazole-2-oxide yielded the lambda Te-4 dichloro derivative. The crystal structure shows that the heterocycle can autoassociate forming macrocyclic tetramers via chalcogen bonding (ChB). DFT-D3 calculations suggest that while the chlorinated molecule is stronger as a ChB donor, it is weaker as a ChB acceptor, resulting in no significant increase in ChB strength in the chlorinated homotetramer. However, partial halogenation or mixing halogenation can selectively yield a more thermodynamically preferred heterotetramer.

Lithium halide ion-pair recognition with halogen bonding and chalcogen bonding heteroditopic macrocycles

Yuen Cheong Tse et al.

Summary: The cooperative recognition of lithium halide ion-pairs by heteroditopic macrocyclic receptors containing halogen bonding and chalcogen bonding was demonstrated. The use of sigma-hole donor motifs resulted in contrasting halide anion selectivity and binding affinity, showing potential for lithium salt recovery through ion-pair recognition.
