A novel cyanine-rhenium(i) tricarbonyl complex has been developed as a potent sonosensitizer and sono-activatable CO-releasing agent for synergistic sonodynamic therapy and CO gas therapy of cancer. The complex induced ferroptosis as the mode of cell death.
