Cerebellar Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation Facilitates Auditory-Vocal Integration in Spinocerebellar Ataxia

Qing Lin et al.

Summary: Clinical studies have shown the potential efficacy of neuronavigated continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS) over the right cerebellum in modulating abnormal auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA). The study found that active cerebellar c-TBS led to smaller vocal compensations for pitch perturbations compared to sham stimulation, with parallel modulatory effects observed at the cortical level. Smaller vocal compensations were also predicted by larger amplitudes of cortical P1 and P2 responses.

Linking Cortical Morphology to Interindividual Variability in Auditory Feedback Control of Vocal Production

Na Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that greater gray-matter volume in the left inferior parietal lobule and greater cortical thickness and surface area in various temporal and parietal regions were associated with larger vocal responses to feedback errors. On the other hand, greater cortical thickness in the right inferior frontal gyrus and superior parietal lobule, as well as surface area in the left precuneus and cuneus, were correlated with smaller magnitudes of vocal responses.

A Causal Role of the Cerebellum in Auditory Feedback Control of Vocal Production

Danhua Peng et al.

Summary: This study provides causal evidence that the cerebellum is involved in auditory feedback control during vocal production. Stimulation of the cerebellum led to enhanced and slowed vocal compensations for pitch perturbations, which may be related to its inhibition on the prefrontal cortex controlling vocal compensation behavior.

Functional specialization within the inferior parietal lobes across cognitive domains

Ole Numssen et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) plays a global role in cognition, with domain-specific modulation of effective connectivity between its subregions in the left and right hemispheres. Functional interactions between the anterior and posterior IPL subregions during tasks involve different lateralized coupling patterns. These findings shed light on the under-appreciated hemispheric specialization of the IPL in supporting distinctive human mental capacities.

Neurobehavioral Effects of LSVT(R) LOUD on Auditory-Vocal Integration in Parkinson's Disease: A Preliminary Study

Yongxue Li et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit abnormal vocal responses to auditory feedback, but treatment with LSVT LOUD led to faster and smaller vocal compensations accompanied by larger ERP P2 responses. Additionally, improved vocal loudness during reading was significantly correlated with reduced vocal compensations for pitch perturbations.

How does hemispheric specialization contribute to human-defining cognition?

Gesa Hartwigsen et al.

Summary: The uniquely human cognitive faculties arise from flexible interactions between specific neural modules, with hemispheric asymmetries in functional specialization. These computational design principles support some of the most advanced cognitive operations, such as semantic understanding, logical reasoning, and language communication. The integration of dual-processing theories with the global workspace theory can explain the dynamic relay of information products between different cognitive systems.
