Carbon nanofiber based superhydrophobic foam composite for high performance oil/water separation

Zheng Guo et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to fabricate flexible and superhydrophobic foam composites for efficient oil/water separation by decorating carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a hollow structure uniformly onto the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foam skeleton. The CNFs not only enhance the surface roughness and hydrophobicity, but also act as numerous capillary tubes, improving oil adsorption and oil/water separation performance. The CNFs network with strong light absorption enables the foam material to have superior photo-thermal conversion capability, excellent corrosion resistance, and the ability to adsorb various kinds of oil with different densities, resulting in high oil/water separation efficiency.

The coating and reduction of graphene oxide on meshes with inverse wettability for continuous water/oil separation

Hui Lu et al.

Summary: A mild, inexpensive, environment-friendly method was reported to fabricate graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) coated meshes with superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity and superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity through scrape coating and electrochemical reduction. The meshes exhibit high efficiency for unidirectional separation of mixtures of water and various light/heavy oils, maintaining their original wettability in harsh environments and showing recyclability for the separation of water/oil mixtures containing boiling water, acid, and salt. Moreover, a T-shaped bidirectional device was assembled for continuous high-efficiency separation of various mixtures of water and oil regardless of density relationship.
