Facile fabrication of VO2/SiO2 aerogel composite films with excellent thermochromic properties for smart windows

Jiahong Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, VO2/SiO2 aerogel composite films were fabricated using a mechanical ball-milling method to enhance the solar modulation efficiency and oxidation resistance of VO2 films. The introduction of SiO2 aerogel not only improved the solar modulation efficiency of the composite film, but also effectively slowed down the oxidation of VO2 and improved its oxidation resistance. The universal Rayleigh scattering effect of SiO2 aerogel, combined with the doping effect of Mg2+ ions, further enhanced the thermochromic properties of VO2 films, providing a new approach for the practical application of VO2 films in smart windows.

SnO2/VO2/SnO2 tri-layer thermochromic films with high luminous transmittance, remarkable solar modulation ability and excellent hydrophobicity grown on glass substrates

Huanhuan Liu et al.

Summary: By adjusting the preparation temperature of the SnO2 buffer layer and antireflection layer, SVS multilayer films with excellent thermochromic properties can be obtained. The phase transition amplitude of the VO2 film reached 354 times at a preparation temperature of 320 degrees C, effectively reducing the phase transition temperature and hysteresis loop width. The SVS multilayer films also exhibited satisfactory luminous transmittance, solar modulation ability, and hydrophobicity, making them a good candidate for VO2-based smart windows.

The thermochromic characteristics of Zn-doped VO2 that were prepared by the hydrothermal and post-annealing process and their polyurethane composite films

Jiahong Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, Zn-doped VO2 nanoparticles were successfully fabricated using a two-step hydrothermal annealing process, and the thermally induced visible light transmittance enhancement of Zn-doped VO2 was studied for the first time. The results showed that Zn-doped VO2 not only exhibited excellent solar modulation ability, but also had the capability to reduce phase transition temperature and increase visible light transmittance after heat-induced phase transition, with good durability. The research findings are significant for improving visible light transmittance after phase transition and realizing practical applications of VO2 in smart windows.

Quantification of critical particle distance for mitigating catalyst sintering

Peng Yin et al.

Summary: The distance between supported metal nanoparticles plays a critical role in mitigating thermally induced sintering, as demonstrated in a study using carbon black supported platinum nanoparticles. By enlarging the particle distance beyond a critical value, particle coalescence can be significantly suppressed up to 900 degrees Celsius, showcasing the importance of metal-support interactions in preventing catalyst deactivation.
