Druggability of lipid metabolism modulation against renal fibrosis

Yuan-yuan Chen et al.

Summary: Renal fibrosis, a common pathological process in chronic kidney disease leading to kidney failure, lacks effective drugs for treatment. Dysfunctional lipid metabolism exacerbates chronic kidney disease and fibrosis, while restoring fatty acid oxidation may alleviate renal fibrosis.

LAGE3 promoted cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and inhibited cell apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma by facilitating the JNK and ERK signaling pathway

Ying Xing et al.

Summary: According to the study, LAGE3 is upregulated in HCC tissues, and its high expression is associated with poor overall survival. Inhibition of LAGE3 would block the proliferation, migration, and invasion of HCC cells, and induce apoptosis. By potentiating the JNK and ERK signaling pathways, LAGE3 enhances the malignant phenotypes of HCC.

Homeoprotein SIX1 compromises antitumor immunity through TGF-beta-mediated regulation of collagens

Wancheng Liu et al.

Summary: SIX1 plays a crucial role in modulating tumor immunogenicity by regulating immune cell infiltration in the TME and overall survival rates of cancer patients. Its expression is negatively correlated with immune cell infiltration in TME, and it affects collagen gene expression to hinder immune cell infiltration and activation.

Epigenetic and Immune-Cell Infiltration Changes in the Tumor Microenvironment in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Zeng-Hong Wu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive review to determine the role of epigenetics in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and immune cell-infiltration characteristics in HCC. The results showed nine differentially expressed genes as independent prognostic factors and significant differences in immune checkpoint expression between high- and low- epigenetic score groups. High ERGs subgroup benefited more from immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy and had a higher T cell exclusion score, while the low ERGs subgroup had a higher T cell dysfunction score.

TUG1 promotes the expression of IFITM3 in hepatocellular carcinoma by competitively binding to miR-29a

Weiwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that TUG1 is upregulated in tumor tissues and HCC cells, while miR-29a is significantly downregulated in liver cancer tissues. TUG1 competitively binds to miR-29a to regulate IFITM3, promoting the development of liver cancer. Downregulation of TUG1 significantly inhibits the migration, invasion, and proliferation of liver cancer cells, highlighting its potential as a key gene for improving the prognosis of HCC patients.

Protocol to establish cancer-associated fibroblasts from surgically resected tissues and generate senescent fibroblasts

Tadahito Yasuda et al.

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that the malignant behavior of cancer is influenced by stromal activity in the tumor microenvironment, with CAFs playing a key role. Establishing CAFs can help understand the impact of the microenvironment on tumor progression, and inflammation-induced senescent fibroblasts mimic the tumor microenvironment more closely.
