The Source of Glycolytic Intermediates in Mammalian Tissues

Tara TeSlaa et al.

Summary: Glycolysis is central to organismal metabolism, with circulating glucose and intracellular glycogen being the main sources of glycolytic intermediates. Gluconeogenesis also contributes to glycolysis to a lesser extent. Different tissues show variations in utilizing circulating glucose for glycolysis, with most tissues relying on glycogen breakdown for glycolytic intermediates. Overall, the body slowly breaks down internal glycogen stores while select tissues rapidly catabolize circulating glucose for oxidation.

Increased glycolysis in skeletal muscle coordinates with adipose tissue in systemic metabolic homeostasis

Cong Xiang et al.

Summary: Enhanced glycolysis in skeletal muscle promotes accelerated glucose disposal, lean phenotype, and high metabolic rate in mice. This effect may be mediated by the activation of carbohydrate-response element-binding protein and the elevation of plasma fibroblast growth factor 21, leading to enhanced lipid oxidation in adipose tissue. These findings provide insights into the benefits of resistance training and manipulating insulin-independent glucose metabolism.

The aetiology and molecular landscape of insulin resistance

David E. James et al.

Summary: Insulin resistance is an early manifestation of various human diseases, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Recent research has highlighted the important role of adipose tissue in the development of insulin resistance by releasing lipids and other factors that disrupt insulin action in other organs. Identifying the targets involved in this unified insulin resistance pathway is crucial for developing new treatments for insulin resistance-related diseases.
