Large scale mapping of soil organic carbon concentration with 3D machine learning and satellite observations

Camile Sothe et al.

Summary: Canada's extensive forests and peatlands play key roles in the global carbon cycle, storing approximately 20% of the world’s soil carbon stock. This study successfully estimated the spatial and vertical distributions of soil organic carbon concentration, with soil depth being the most important factor. The findings provide insights into factors controlling SOC concentration in Canada and potential areas with high carbon reserves.

Modelling and mapping soil organic carbon stocks under future climate change in south-eastern Australia

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: SOC plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration, and the study predicts current and future SOC stocks in New South Wales, Australia using a Digital Soil Mapping framework. The results show that future climate change will impact SOC stocks, with potential implications for land management and climate change mitigation strategies at the regional level.

On the relative importance of landscape variables to plant diversity and phylogenetic community structure on uninhabited islands, South Korea

Hyungho Kim et al.

Summary: This study assessed how landscape variables drive plant diversity and community structure, finding that island area and distance from mainland are the main drivers of species richness and phylogenetic diversity, and distance from mainland significantly affects community structure measured by SES.MPD. The analysis suggests that community structure provides more information on ecological processes and assembly mechanisms than diversity indices alone, recommending its implementation as an additional measure of biodiversity for landscape ecology and conservation planning in island ecosystems.

Effects of groundwater tables and salinity levels on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen accumulation in coastal wetlands with different plant cover types in a Chinese estuary

Yanan Guan et al.

Summary: Groundwater tables and soil salinity can significantly affect the biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen in coastal wetlands by altering soil properties. This study in the Yellow River Estuary found that SOC and TN varied spatially and temporally, with concentrations mainly in the top 20 cm of soil. The relationships among SOC, TN, and EC were well-fitted by Lorentz models, suggesting certain EC values could enhance carbon and nitrogen accumulation in wetlands.

Exploring the likely relationship between soil carbon change and environmental controls using nonrevisited temporal data sets: Mapping soil carbon dynamics across China

Ren-Min Yang et al.

Summary: This study utilized digital soil mapping techniques to analyze patterns of SOC stock changes in China using two independent temporal datasets, and evaluated the scale-dependent response of SOC changes to environmental dynamics. It was found that changes in climate factors were dominant controls of SOC change at the national scale.

Mapping soil organic carbon stock by hyperspectral and time-series multispectral remote sensing images in low-relief agricultural areas

Long Guo et al.

Summary: High-precision digital soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks mapping plays a crucial role in agricultural production management and global carbon cycle. This study successfully predicted SOC stock, SOC, and soil bulk density through hyperspectral and time-series multispectral remote sensing images, with the extreme learning machine (ELM) model outperforming the partial least square regression (PLSR) model. The combination of Sentinel 2 images and ELM achieved the best prediction results for soil properties in low relief farmland regions. This mapping strategy using time-series multispectral remote sensing images provides valuable information for agricultural management and carbon cycle research.

The global value of coastal wetlands for storm protection

Robert Costanza et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services, including protecting coastal communities from storms. This study estimated the global value of storm protection services provided by coastal wetlands for the first time, showing the importance of investing in conservation and restoration of these wetlands. With the increase in frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones due to climate change, the benefits of protecting and restoring coastal wetlands will become increasingly important and valuable in the future.

Mapping soil organic carbon stocks and trends with satellite-driven high resolution maps over South Africa

Zander S. Venter et al.

Summary: Estimating and monitoring soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is crucial for maintaining soil productivity and meeting climate change targets. Using satellite-driven machine learning, we mapped SOC stocks under natural vegetation in South Africa over 35 years, showing changes in SOC stocks and trends across different biomes.

Spatial distribution of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in surface soil across the Pearl River Delta area, South China

Huihua Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) had similar spatial patterns, while sulfur (S) distribution in soil was different. There was no correlation between soil S and C. The constant C:N ratio in soil was attributed to soil biological processes, while soil C:S ratio fluctuated due to geochemical processes and exogenous S inputs.

Digital soil mapping of soil organic carbon stocks in Western Ghats, South India

S. Dharumarajan et al.

Summary: Spatial information on soil carbon storage is crucial for soil quality and environmental management. A study mapping soil organic carbon stock in a region of South India found better prediction for surface layer compared to deeper layers, with high-resolution maps outperforming existing products. The total estimated soil organic carbon stock was 917 Tg in the area studied, aiding in soil health assessment and land use planning.
