Functionalization of Porous Cellulose with Glyoxyl Groups as a Carrier for Enzyme Immobilization and Stabilization

Sandro Martins de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The surface chemistry developed for the fabrication of glyoxyl-agarose carriers has been successfully translated to macroporous cellulose carriers. This novel CEL-based carrier introduces aldehyde groups in a density similar to agarose-glyoxyl carrier. The enzymes immobilized on CEL-based materials show remarkable stability and high catalytic activity.

Grafted TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber embedded with modified magnetite for effective adsorption of lead ions

Ragab E. Abou-Zeid et al.

Summary: The study successfully achieved an 80% removal efficiency of lead ions using a prepared nanocomposite, indicating that the magnetic grafted oxidized cellulose nanofiber nanocomposite is a promising green adsorbent material with good adsorption performance and easy removal. The kinetics and isotherms studies showed that the sorption reaction follows a pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model, respectively, highlighting the adsorption of lead ions occurs within the pores and via the functional groups present on the nanocomposite.

A mathematical model for pH-responsive ionically crosslinked TEMPO nanocellulose hydrogel design in drug delivery systems

Tilen Kopac et al.

Summary: Ionically crosslinked hydrogels based on TEMPO nanocelullose and alginate were prepared to develop a generalized pH value, temperature and biopolymer concentration dependent mathematical model. The research focused on the effects of hydrogen bonds in the mathematical model, especially in the low crosslink densities of TEMPO nanocellulose hydrogel in acidic medium. Comparisons were made with alginate hydrogels as samples with less significant hydrogel bonds effect. The study discussed the mechanisms of swelling and shrinkage, as well as the influence of substituent groups, ionic interactions, and hydrogen bonds on different pH mediums.

TEMPO-oxidized cellulose fibers from wheat straw: Effect of ultrasonic pretreatment and concentration on structure and rheological properties of suspensions

Ruijing Qu et al.

Summary: Cellulose and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose fibers (TOCF) were prepared from wheat straw with ultrasonic and chemical treatments to investigate their structure and functionalities. Rheology was used to study the sol-gel transition of TOCF suspensions, showing that ultrasonic pretreatment and temperature affected the properties. While the functional groups were similar, XRD and TGA revealed different crystal structures and thermal stabilities. Gelation was independent of ultrasonic pretreatment, but rheological properties were highly influenced by concentration and temperature.

Effect of interfacial structure based on grafting density of poly (2-methoxyethyl acrylate) on blood compatibility

Tomoya Ueda et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate) (PMEA) density on interfacial structure and blood compatibility. The results demonstrated that hydration to the polymer effectively suppressed platelet adhesion, with the water-rich region showing excellent blood compatibility on gPMEA surfaces.
