Prevalence of Frailty and Associations with Oral Anticoagulant Prescribing in Atrial Fibrillation

Saket R. Sanghai et al.

Summary: Frailty is prevalent among older veterans with NVAF, and it is associated with decreased prescription of oral anticoagulants. Older adults with frailty are less likely to be prescribed OAC, but if they are, they are more likely to receive DOACs than VKAs.

Summary: As frailty increases, the prevalence of atrial fibrillation and stroke risk also increases among the elderly. However, the prescription rate of oral anticoagulation (OAC) is only around 50%.

Comparative effectiveness and safety of direct acting oral anticoagulants in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation for stroke prevention: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Junguo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the evidence of direct and indirect comparisons of novel oral anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation, and found that apixaban had a more favorable profile in reducing the risk of stroke and major bleeding. However, additional high-quality evidence is needed to provide firm recommendations for clinical decision-making.

Frailty and Clinical Outcomes of Direct Oral Anticoagulants Versus Warfarin in Older Adults With Atrial Fibrillation A Cohort Study

Dae Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: The study showed that in older adults with atrial fibrillation, apixaban was associated with lower rates of adverse events across all frailty levels, while dabigatran and rivaroxaban were only associated with lower event rates among nonfrail patients.
