Evaluation of the impact of freeze-thaw cycles on pore structure characteristics of black soil using X-ray computed tomography

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: Freeze-thaw cycles have a significant impact on soil pore structure, increasing both porosity and complexity of pore-throat networks. Macroporosity plays a key role in the increase of total porosity, with the number of pores and paths positively correlated with macroporosity. The freeze-thaw effect mainly affects pores with larger effective diameters, leading to more branch paths and throats.

The dispersion mechanism of dispersive seasonally frozen soil in western Jilin Province

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the dispersion of soil in the seasonally frozen area is mainly influenced by the physicochemical properties of the soil and salt migration. In winter, salt moves from the lower soil layer to the upper layer along with water, while in spring, water evaporation causes the sodium ion content in the surface soil to increase, enhancing soil dispersibility.

Theoretical and Numerical Analyses on Hydro-Thermal-Salt-Mechanical Interaction of Unsaturated Salinized Soil Subjected to Typical Unidirectional Freezing Process

Xudong Zhang et al.

Summary: The freezing process of salinized soil is a complex phenomenon influenced by hydro-thermal-salt-mechanical coupling. An improved mathematical model that considers vapor flow and the relation between saturation and void ratio is established to simulate water migration, heat transfer, vapor flow, solute transport, and deformation. The model's validity is verified through numerical simulation, and the characteristics of the curves are analyzed by comparing with previous research.

Salinity effect on the liquid limit of soils

Zi Ying et al.

Summary: This study clarified the mechanism controlling liquid limit by conducting tests on MX80 Na-bentonite and silty soil, showing that the liquid limit and yield stress of MX80 increased then decreased with increasing salinity. The sedimentation test demonstrated faster settling rate and smaller sediment volume for MX80 and silty soil suspensions in NaCl solution, indicating the shrinkage of diffuse double layer and the formation of denser aggregated structure as the underlying mechanisms.
