Testing the relationship between objective indoor environment quality and subjective experiences of comfort

Michael J. Roskams et al.

Summary: The study suggests that repeated sampling is a more appropriate method for measuring comfort, and adherence to recommended temperatures can reduce the risk of thermal discomfort. There is a strong association between environmental comfort and self-rated productivity, with employees rating themselves as most productive when satisfied with noise levels, temperature, air quality, and lighting within the office.

Higher education students' indoor environmental quality satisfaction benchmark

Suyeon Bae et al.

Summary: The study found that students in different classroom buildings in Minnesota, USA were most satisfied with overall cleaning and maintenance, while least satisfied with access to electric outlets. Female students were less satisfied with overall thermal conditions and temperature, while male students were less satisfied with daylighting, electric lighting, and view conditions. The most significant impact on overall satisfaction was found to be the amount of electrical lighting.

Summary: Psychological impact plays a significant role in adaptive thermal comfort models, with perceived control being an important factor. Studies in China's Hot Summer and Cold Winter zone found that different heating systems can affect residents' thermal neutral temperatures, and perceived control can improve thermal comfort.

The in-situ implementation of a feature-rich thermostat: A building engineering and human factors approach to improve perceived control in offices

Connor Brackley et al.

Summary: The study applied theories of thermal comfort, human factors, and building technology to improve perceived control in 25 offices in an institutional building in Ottawa, Canada. An audit of the building automation system in the context of perceived control and survey responses from occupants revealed likely barriers to usability. Features were developed and implemented into the existing thermostat's software interface based on a human factors framework, showing promise for future design iterations.

An indoor environmental quality assessment of office spaces at an urban Australian university

Summary: The study found that modern office buildings with fully double-glazed facades showed the highest levels of overall comfort and satisfaction, while traditional building types performed the worst. The deep floor plates in traditional buildings may contribute to lower levels of comfort and satisfaction due to a more enclosed environment.
