Systematic review and meta-analysis of tracheostomy outcomes in COVID-19 patients

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis of COVID-19 tracheostomy patients aimed to determine the incidence of complications, mortality, time to decannulation and ventilatory weaning. The analysis found that a majority of patients were weaned from mechanical ventilation, while the cumulative mortality rate was around 19%. There was no significant difference in outcomes between surgical and percutaneous tracheostomy, as well as between early and late tracheostomy timing.

Summary: Tracheostomy protocols for COVID-19 patients vary widely worldwide, with most recommending at least 14 days of intubation before the procedure and negative COVID-19 test results prior to tracheostomy. The use of N95 or higher PPE is universal, with both open and percutaneous techniques reported. Timing of tracheostomy changes postoperatively range from 5 to over 30 days, sometimes conditional on negative COVID-19 test results.
