Dark fermentation: Production and utilization of volatile fatty acid from different wastes- A review

Ashutosh Kumar Pandey et al.

Summary: VFAs are the building blocks of the chemical industry and play a key role in the planet's organic carbon cycle. To address the issues of unsustainable VFA production from fossil fuels, it is crucial to develop alternate sources through anaerobic digestion. By researching accessible feedstocks, influencing parameters, and utilizing VFAs to create consumer products, economic stability can be achieved through traditional and advanced production methods.

A review on the factors influencing biohydrogen production from lactate: The key to unlocking enhanced dark fermentative processes

Octavio Garcia-Depraect et al.

Summary: Dark fermentation is a promising biological method to produce bio-hydrogen and other value added bio-products, but faces challenges like process instability and low hydrogen production yields. Inhibitory activity of lactate-producing bacteria against hydrogen producers has been highlighted as a major bottleneck, although lactate based metabolic pathways are considered prevalent in hydrogen production.

Two-Stage anaerobic digestion in agroindustrial waste treatment: A review

Paulo Andre Cremonez et al.

Summary: The use of multi-stage anaerobic digestion technology is effective in treating agroindustrial effluents, especially substrates like manipueira, vinasse, and dairy wastewater which yield high amounts of hydrogen and methane. Future research should focus on new microbial technologies and optimizing process parameters for maturation and scale-up of the two-stage anaerobic digestion technique.

Dynamics of dark fermentation microbial communities in the light of lactate and butyrate production

Anna Detman et al.

Summary: The study focused on the processes during the acidogenic step of anaerobic digestion, exploring the nutritional interactions between dark fermentation bacteria and lactic acid bacteria. Through batch experiments, it was found that the metabolic activity and composition of DF microbial communities varied depending on fermentation conditions. The balance between LAB and butyrate producers and pH values play a crucial role in the conversion of lactate and acetate to butyrate.
