Transacting brains: testing an actor-partner model of frontal EEG activity in mother-infant dyads

John E. Krzeczkowski et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that socially avoidant mothers can influence the development of their offspring, but the neurophysiological mechanisms and the role of infants are not well understood. This study suggests that individual differences in frontal electroencephalogram asymmetry (FA) patterns may be a potential mechanism through which socially avoidant mothers transfer affective/behavioral information to their infants.

Evaluating the internal consistency of subtraction-based and residualized difference scores: Considerations for psychometric reliability analyses of event-related potentials

Peter E. Clayson et al.

Summary: The study found that difference scores for error-related negativity (ERN) can be reliable, supporting their use in studies of individual differences; however, the reliability of difference scores for reward positivity (RewP) is poor, largely due to high correlation between reward and non-reward ERPs. Generalizability theory is more suitable for estimating internal consistency of subtraction-based difference scores than classical test theory.

Changes in theta and alpha oscillatory signatures of attentional control in older and middle age

Eleanor Huizeling et al.

Summary: The study revealed distinct neural signatures in attentional control among three age groups, with younger individuals showing more efficient attentional refocusing compared to middle-aged and older adults. Older individuals demonstrated residual beneficial theta activity during attention refocusing, while middle-aged and older adults exhibited slowed attentional refocusing accompanied by posterior theta deficits and increased recruitment of frontal areas. Theta, but not alpha, modulation correlated with task performance, suggesting potential differences in cognitive decline and strategies for compensation among older adults.

Laterality 2020: entering the next decade

Sebastian Ocklenburg et al.

Summary: In the upcoming decade, laterality research is expected to focus on addressing the replication crisis, increasing the diversity of research samples, utilizing meta-analysis and large-scale databank studies, exploring altered laterality in psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, and understanding the relevance of laterality research for treatment. Additionally, there will be efforts to enhance ecological validity, bridge the gap between human and non-human model species, utilize next-generation neuroimaging, integrate graph-theory and machine learning, and use mobile EEG and smartphone-based data collection to advance the field.
