Aquaporin-4 Reduces Post-Traumatic Seizure Susceptibility by Promoting Astrocytic Glial Scar Formation in Mice

Daniel C. Lu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a protective role of AQP4 in post-traumatic seizure susceptibility by promoting astrogliosis, formation of a glial scar, and preventing microgliosis.

Global and Regional Changes in Perivascular Space in Idiopathic and Familial Parkinson's Disease

Erin K. Donahue et al.

Summary: The glymphatic system, including the perivascular space, plays a critical role in brain homeostasis. Differences in PVS volume fraction were found in Parkinson's disease subtypes, particularly in FPD. Regionally, differences were observed in the medial orbitofrontal region between FPD and NMC.

Impaired meningeal lymphatic drainage in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease

Xue-Bing Ding et al.

Summary: Animal studies have suggested a link between meningeal lymphatic dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. This study found that patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease had reduced meningeal lymphatic flow and delayed cervical lymph node perfusion compared to patients with atypical Parkinsonian disorders. In mouse models, impaired meningeal lymphatic drainage was associated with worsened alpha-syn pathology and PD progression.

Neurovascular-modulation: A review of primary vascular responses to transcranial electrical stimulation as a mechanism of action

Mersedeh Bahr-Hosseini et al.

Summary: The vascular response to transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) involves both primary and secondary phenomena mediated by four cellular elements, with the nature of the response depending on vessel anatomy and physiology. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms underlying the vascular response and its impact on neural activity in healthy and pathological conditions.

Skull and vertebral bone marrow are myeloid cell reservoirs for the meninges and CNS parenchyma

Andrea Cugurra et al.

Summary: The meninges contain a pool of monocytes and neutrophils supplied by adjacent skull and vertebral bone marrow, rather than by the blood. Under pathological conditions, CNS-infiltrating myeloid cells can originate from the brain borders and have distinct transcriptional signatures from their blood-derived counterparts. Therefore, myeloid cells from adjacent bone marrow niches are strategically placed to supply innate immune cells under both homeostatic and pathological conditions.

Aging-associated deficit in CCR7 is linked to worsened glymphatic function, cognition, neuroinflammation, and β-amyloid pathology

Sandro Da Mesquita et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of aging on brain function, revealing an immune cell pathway associated with brain aging and cognitive decline. The research found that a reduction in CCR7 expression in old mice affected the transfer of immune cells through the lymphatic vasculature, leading to cognitive impairment and brain Aβ deposition.
