Neutral and adaptive genomic variation in hybrid zones of two ecologically diverged Petunia species (Solanaceae)

Lina Caballero-Villalobos et al.

Summary: The study on speciation of two partially sympatric taxa of Petunia Juss showed evidence of low asymmetric gene flow from P. axillaris to P. exserta associated with recent secondary contact, suggesting that pollinator specificity is not the only trait responsible for species integrity in this system. The genetic structure revealed well-differentiated species-level lineages and identified 54 non-synonymous candidate variants under natural selection, supporting the role of extrinsic factors such as habitat preferences in reproductive isolation between Petunia spp. The combination of pre- and post-zygotic barriers along with demographic processes were proposed to maintain the species integrity.

Comparative phylogeography of bromeliad species: effects of historical processes and mating system on genetic diversity and structure

Jordana Neri et al.

Summary: This study compared the genetic diversity and structure of two epiphytic plant species unique to the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, revealing contrasting patterns based on their reproductive systems. Vriesea simplex, predominantly outcrossing, exhibited high genetic diversity and low genetic differentiation, while V. scalaris, mainly selfing, displayed low genetic diversity and high genetic differentiation. Historical climatic changes during the Pleistocene likely influenced the genetic diversity and structure of these Neotropical plant species.
