Summary: This study compares COVID-19 mortality with mortality from all causes and common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Cyprus, Iceland, and Malta over 8 months. The results show that COVID-19 mortality was generally lower than mortality from NCDs, but there was a significant increase in mortality during the second wave. Population density, an ageing population, and social behavior may play a role in the burden of COVID-19.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the accuracy parameters of different diagnostic methods for detecting SARS-CoV-2, finding that computed tomography has high sensitivity but low specificity, while the combination of IgM and IgG antibodies showed promising results. The research also indicated that RT-PCR remains the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19 in sputum samples, but combining different diagnostic methods can improve accuracy.

Summary: Available data suggests that at least one third of SARS-CoV-2 infections are asymptomatic. Longitudinal studies indicate that nearly three quarters of individuals who test positive via PCR but show no symptoms at the time of testing will remain asymptomatic. Control strategies for COVID-19 need to be adjusted considering the prevalence and transmission risk of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Summary: Reports on long-lasting COVID-19 symptoms, known as 'long COVID', are increasing. Analysis of data from over 4,000 COVID-19 cases revealed that long COVID is more common in older individuals, those with higher body mass index, and females. Experiencing more than five symptoms in the first week of illness was associated with long COVID. A simple model showed promise in distinguishing between short and long COVID cases early in the disease.

Summary: The symptoms of long-haulers of COVID-19 can be classified into potentially infection-related, acute post-COVID, long post-COVID, and persistent post-COVID stages. Establishing time reference points is crucial, while the plethora of symptoms affecting multiple systems suggests the presence of different underlying mechanisms.

Summary: COVID-19 has significantly impacted population health in Scotland, with marked inequalities observed across different levels of deprivation. The extent of inequality due to COVID-19 is similar to averting all annual DALYs due to diabetes, highlighting the importance of implementing effective policy interventions to reduce health inequalities in recovery and improvement of population health.
