Polyvictimization, Sex Work, and Depressive Symptoms Among Transgender Women and Men Who Have Sex With Men

Ankur Srivastava et al.

Summary: This study found an association between polyvictimization, sex work, and depressive symptoms among transgender women and men who have sex with men (MSM) in India. The research showed that individuals engaged in sex work were more likely to report various types of abuse, and experiencing multiple forms of abuse and engaging in sex work were associated with higher odds of reporting depressive symptoms. The study highlights the importance of screening for victimization and providing crisis management in national intervention programs on HIV risk reduction. Additionally, interventions should address the diversity of the population, including those engaged in sex work, and focus on reducing stress related to gender-based stigma and discrimination among transgender women and MSM.
