Functional classification of plant long noncoding RNAs: a transcript is known by the company it keeps

Leandro Lucero et al.

Summary: Advancements in high-throughput sequencing technologies have unveiled a complex network of transcripts in eukaryotic organisms, including numerous long noncoding RNAs. While significant progress has been made in understanding lncRNA biology in animals, the functional characterization of plant lncRNAs remains challenging and in its early stages.

Editing miR482b and miR482c Simultaneously by CRISPR/Cas9 Enhanced Tomato Resistance to Phytophthora infestans

Yuhui Hong et al.

Summary: The study successfully knocked out miR482b and miR482c simultaneously in tomatoes using the CRISPR/Cas9 system, resulting in transgenic plants with increased resistance to late blight. Simultaneous knockout of miR482b and miR482c was more effective than knocking out miR482b alone, and led to perturbations in the expression of other miRNAs.

Optimal irrigation amount and nitrogen rate improved seed cotton yield while maintaining fiber quality of drip-fertigated cotton in northwest China

Xianghao Hou et al.

Summary: Improving the quality of cotton fiber is crucial for enhancing the competitiveness in the international market, but balancing this with maintaining seed cotton yield remains a challenge. The study found that increasing irrigation amount and nitrogen rate led to higher seed cotton yield, with the optimal combination being 100% ETc irrigation and 350 kg N ha-1 nitrogen rate.

Dynamic characteristics and functional analysis provide new insights into long non-coding RNA responsive to Verticillium dahliae infection in Gossypium hirsutum

Guoning Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified a large number of differentially expressed lncRNAs that play important roles in cotton resistance to Verticillium wilt, participating in dynamic characteristics such as chromosome distribution, expression profiles, and biological functions. These lncRNAs regulate resistance to pathogens by modulating key genes involved in jasmonic acid biosynthesis.

Long Noncoding RNAs in Plants

Andrzej T. Wierzbicki et al.

Summary: Plants have a diverse range of transcription machineries, with four dedicated RNA polymerases involved in producing long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) that play various regulatory roles in gene expression and response to environmental stimuli. These lncRNAs can impact gene expression by controlling chromatin accessibility, transcription, splicing, and translation.

Differences in biochemical, gas exchange and hydraulic response to water stress in desiccation tolerant and sensitive fronds of the fern Anemia caffrorum

Miquel Nadal et al.

Summary: The fern Anemia caffrorum produces desiccation tolerant fronds in the dry season and desiccation sensitive fronds in the wet season. This allows for maximizing carbon gain during the rainy season and investing more in protective mechanisms during the hot dry season.

The long noncoding RNA FRILAIR regulates strawberry fruit ripening by functioning as a noncanonical target mimic

Yajun Tang et al.

Summary: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as important regulators in plant development, but few have been functionally characterized in fruit ripening. A novel lncRNA, FRILAIR, was identified in strawberry fruits, which modulates fruit ripening by fine-tuning miRNA activity. This study demonstrates the potential of lncRNAs as valuable resources for manipulating the gene regulatory network responsible for fruit ripening.

Long noncoding RNA lncRNA354 functions as a competing endogenous RNA of miR160b to regulate ARF genes in response to salt stress in upland cotton

Xiaopei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study identified an endogenous lncRNA, lncRNA354, that acts as a competing endogenous RNA to attenuate miR160b suppression of target genes, including auxin response factors (ARFs), in response to salt stress in cotton. Silencing or overexpressing lncRNA354 affected the expression of miR160b and target ARFs, ultimately modulating auxin signaling and influencing growth and salt tolerance.

Evolutionary and Characteristic Analysis of RING-DUF1117 E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Genes in Gossypium Discerning the Role of GhRDUF4D in Verticillium dahliae Resistance

Yan-Peng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study detected and characterized RDUF genes in four cotton species, classified them into three groups, and found segmental duplication occurred during cotton evolution. The GhRDUF genes were widely expressed during cotton growth and responded to cold, drought, and salt stress, as well as being sensitive to jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, and ethylene signals. Additionally, GhRDUF genes were found to be involved in response to V. dahliae infection, with GhRDUF4D enhancing resistance in transgenic Arabidopsis and weakening resistance in silenced plants.
