Incidence and Risk Factors for Complications and Mortality After Vertebroplasty or Kyphoplasty in the Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture-Analysis of 1,932 Cases From the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement

Ho-Joong Kim et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study investigated the incidence and risk factors for complications after vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. The major complication and mortality rates were 4.9% and 2.1% respectively, higher than previous reports. Increased creatinine and ASA 4 were independently associated with mortality after vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty.

Age Is Just a Number: Patient Age Does Not Affect Outcome Following Surgery for Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures

Anmol Gupta et al.

Summary: Based on a retrospective study, younger patients are more likely to experience surgical complications, while older patients are more likely to be readmitted within 30 days following surgery. Patient age showed no correlation with mortality rates in the perioperative period.

Efficiency of coordinator-based osteoporosis intervention in fragility fracture patients: a prospective randomized trial

M. Osaki et al.

Summary: The study found that coordinator-based interventions for fragility fractures improved bone density assessment implementation and treatment rates and enhanced treatment persistence rates in the early stages following bone fractures. This suggests that liaison intervention may help both fracture and osteoporosis physicians for the evaluation of osteoporosis and initiation and continuation of osteoporosis medication.

The effect on subsequent fracture risk of age, sex, and prior fracture site by recency of prior fracture

J. A. Kanis et al.

Summary: The risk of a recurrent fragility fracture varies by age, sex, and site of sentinel fracture when recency is held constant. Men have higher hazard ratios for prior fractures compared to women, and the hazard ratios decrease progressively with age.
